Lažany: Castle Park, History and Events
Accommodation in Lažany
If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Lažany, you can plan your stay around two distinct themes: the history of the castle and town, or local events. Lažany combines a castle complex with a two-part settlement structure and events tied to specific dates or holiday periods. These themes offer different points of reference: the castle and park provide insights into the area’s historical periods, the locations of Sázky and the bridge help with orientation, and the event dates help with planning your visit.
Settlement Structure and Orientation
The settlement consists of the houses by the castle, on the access road from Strakonice, and the hamlet of Sázky, about 250 metres away. The settlement structure therefore comprises two areas: the houses by the castle and the separate hamlet of Sázky. South of Lažany, road bridge No. 1731-12 stands on the dam that divides the Kořenský Pond, towards Doubravice. These are different reference points for orientation: Sázky identifies another part of the settlement, while the bridge is a structure on the divided pond.
The Castle Complex and Its Historical Periods
The castle park is part of the Lažany castle complex and covers an estimated 2.5 hectares. Its present-day design follows the English landscape romanticism of the period after the mid-19th century. The Lažany fortress was converted into a castle at the end of the 16th century; a second Baroque wing was added in 1760. Lažany was first mentioned in 1384, when the settlement belonged to Ježek of Lažany. These dates refer to different historical periods: 1384 relates to the history of the settlement, the late 16th century and 1760 to the castle’s architectural development, and the period after the mid-19th century to the park’s present-day design. The park’s features also complement each other: its estimated area indicates its size, while the style designation describes its landscape design.
Events Throughout the Year
Regular annual events include the burning of the witches (pálení čarodějnic) on 30 April. A Nohejbal tournament is regularly held in June. The main event is the Pouťový turnaj in small-sided football: it takes place on the first weekend of the school holidays and is played for the mayor’s challenge cup. There are also events with competitions during the summer holidays, organised together with holiday-home owners. The events fall at different times: the fixed date of 30 April is followed by a June tournament and the event on the first weekend of the holidays; other competitions take place during the summer holidays. If your trip depends on one of these events, check the current dates in advance.
Sporting Activities
A sports field was built for small-sided football, Nohejbal and tennis. Small-sided football and Nohejbal also feature as tournament sports; tennis rounds out the sports for which the field was built. This lets you distinguish specific tournament dates from the sporting activities associated with the field’s stated uses.
