Mirovice lies in the valley of the Skalice River. The town offers several specific points of interest when choosing a destination: the river landscape, historic buildings, a Jewish cemetery near the town, traces of mining in Slomínek and cultural events at the Mirovice Hussite Church. The railway station on line 200 also helps put the town in context.

The Skalice and its river landscape

The Skalice rises in the Brdy Mountains. After joining the Lomnice near Zvíkov Castle, it becomes a right-bank tributary of the Otava. This connects Mirovice’s location in the valley to a wider river system: the source, confluence and subsequent course of the Skalice give the landscape a specific geographical context. Those interested in regional geography will find more here than just a town by a river.

Churches, a column and a cultural monument

The Church of St Clement in Mirovice is originally Gothic and was later remodelled in the Baroque style. A large Schwarzenberg coat of arms is displayed on the gable. The building’s history and coat of arms draw attention to different details of the same structure. The Marian Column on Masaryk Square was erected in 1717. Another historic landmark is the stone flood-protection bridge in Mirovice, which was declared a cultural monument at the end of 2018. Together, these structures give an impression of the different ways in which history is embedded in the townscape.

Jewish cemetery near Mirovice

The Jewish cemetery is located in the cadastral area of Myslín, near Mirovice, in the valley beyond the town, on the eastern bank of the Skalice stream. It was probably established around 1680; approximately 240 gravestones have been preserved. The approximate date of its founding and the surviving gravestones provide two specific historical points of reference: one indicates when it originated, while the other describes what has been preserved at the cemetery.

Mining heritage in Slomínek

Traces of extensive historic mining activity have been preserved in Slomínek near Mirovice. These include abandoned quarry faces, spoil heaps and an old mine structure. A mine adit with gold-bearing quartz veins has also been preserved in the landscape. The remnants and the description of the veins highlight different aspects: they point both to former mining methods and to the geological character of the adit. Slomínek thus adds a distinct theme to Mirovice’s architectural history and religious heritage.
