Landscape and cycling route

Sousedovice lies at the foot of the 600-meter-high Hradiště. To the west rises the wooded hill Kamenná Bába, also called Skalice, at an elevation of 555 meters. To the southwest, the elongated, wooded Kbýl, at 664 meters, stretches in the direction of Libětice. The extensive Hůl forest lies between Sousedovice and the municipalities of Drachkov and Pracejovice. The elevations can be compared directly: Kbýl is the highest of the three features mentioned, Hradiště lies between them, and Kamenná Bába, also known as Skalice, is the lowest. Their forms also differ: Kbýl is elongated, Kamenná Bába is a wooded hill, and Hůl is an extensive forest.

Cycling route 1068 passes through Sousedovice and a landscape with expansive views. Behind Sousedovice, the geological formation Kamenná baba lies along the cycling route. The route through the village and the formation’s location behind Sousedovice are therefore two distinct geographical reference points for route planning.

History and village character

Archaeological finds show that the present-day area of Sousedovice has been inhabited for more than 2,000 years. In the early Iron Age, around the 4th century BC, a settlement surrounded by stone ramparts stood on Hradiště. After a Slavic tribe resettled the area around the 7th century, Hradiště and its outer fortification continued to be used until the 10th century, according to available accounts. Archaeological habitation of the present-day area thus dates back long before the first written mention, which was in 1243. Also in 1243, Bavor I donated part of Strakonice Castle and several villages, including Sousedovice, to the convent of the Order of Malta. The year refers here to two distinct historical facts: the first mention of Sousedovice and the year of the donation that included the village.

The Sousedovice chapel stands on the village green. It is considered an important monument and was reconstructed in 2002. A monument to those who fell in the First World War, erected in 1936, stands beside the municipal office. The two memorial sites are in different locations: the chapel is on the village green, and the monument is beside the municipal office.

Events and practical planning

The traditional Masopust procession takes place every year and passes through Smradice, Libětice and Sousedovice. A masked carnival for children is also held in Sousedovice every year. The procession therefore passes through three places, while the carnival takes place in Sousedovice. If either event is important for your travel dates, check the specific event dates in advance.

The multi-purpose sports ground in Sousedovice is fenced and locked. Its use must be reported to the municipal office. Bear this requirement in mind if you are including the sports ground in your travel plans.
