Truskovice – between orchards and cycling routes
Accommodation in Truskovice
Truskovice can be explored through several themes: cycling routes converge in the town, buildings of vernacular architecture have been preserved, and fruit growing shapes the surrounding countryside. Small ponds, viewpoints and regional festivals add to these impressions. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between features within the town and destinations in the surrounding landscape.
Cycling Routes and Getting There
Several cycling trails and routes converge in Truskovice. These include the Historická krajina Netolicka educational cycling route and the Fruit-Growing Cycling Route. The Historická krajina Netolicka is about 50 km long, signposted and runs along paved paths. There are 16 information stations along the route.
Public transport connections are also relevant when planning your trip: there are regular services from Truskovice to Netolice and Vodňany. Truskovice has no railway connection; the railway station in Vodňany is five kilometres from Truskovice. If you plan to travel by public transport, check the timetables before you set off.
Orchard Landscape and Viewpoints
Truskovice lies in a well-known fruit-growing region. A large proportion of the agricultural land is planted with fruit trees, including apple and cherry trees. Fruit growing shapes the surrounding countryside and also gives the Fruit-Growing Cycling Route its name. The landscape can also be explored at specific, named locations: in the southern part of Truskovice, a group of small ponds lies around the Malovický potok and below the hill Libějovický vrch. The surrounding area is part of the Libějovicko-Lomecko protected landscape monument zone.
There is a viewpoint on the 588 m-high Pohořelec. From there, you can enjoy views of blossoming orchards and the Šumava peaks Boubín, Bobík, Libínské sedlo and Knížecí stolec. The view thus connects the area’s fruit growing with a panorama of these named peaks. If you include both the landscape and cycling in your travel plans, the two themes also come together in the names of local routes.
Architecture and Local History
The first surviving written mention of Truskovice dates from 1274. Several buildings of vernacular architecture have been preserved in the town. At the edge of the town stands a niche chapel dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk; the village square is home to the Chapel of Saint Florian. It is a building in the rural Baroque style, dating from 1821. The two chapels’ different locations provide a clear point of reference within the town: one is at the edge, the other on the village square.
Southeast of Truskovice lies the pilgrimage Church of the Name of the Virgin Mary at Lomec. Together with the buildings in the town, it adds another named destination nearby to the cultural highlights.
Summer and Regional Festivals
In summer, it is possible to swim in natural waters in Truskovice. Events also provide useful dates to consider when planning a trip. The Staročeská konopická festival is held regularly in Truskovice. Check the specific event dates separately.
In the Chelčicko-Lhenický microregion, flower festivals take place in May, and fruit festivals in October and November; dates may vary. The fruit festivals include fruit-growers’ markets and competitions for apples, slivovitz, spirits and the fruit speciality of the year. Programme details may change. The regional festival dates therefore differ from those of the regularly held Staročeská konopická in Truskovice: when planning, it is important to check both the specific venue and the date.
