Vodňanské Svobodné Hory can be explored through several different travel interests. The Cesta na Lomec tourist route passes through the village, the Naučná stezka Stožice nature trail continues on to the village, and a cycling and hiking route runs through it. On Svobodná Hora are the Haniperk observation tower and the remains of medieval gold mining. Also part of the area are the history of small settlements dating from the 18th century and horse riding as a related leisure activity. Trails, views, local history and horse riding thus offer you different starting points for your stay.

Routes with Different Connections

The Cesta na Lomec tourist route passes through Vodňanské Svobodné Hory. The 8 km Naučná stezka Stožice nature trail continues on to the village and passes Svobodná Hora, which lies 640 m above sea level, on the way. Another route, Okolím Vodňan a vzpomínka na zlatou horečku v Křepicích, is a cycling and hiking route through the village; it is listed as 21 km, with a 31 km alternative. Within this route, 21 km is the shorter option and 31 km the longer alternative; even the shorter option is longer than the 8 km nature trail. The routes therefore differ not only in length but also in type: here, a nature trail is contrasted with a combined cycling and hiking route. Their connections to the village also differ: Cesta na Lomec passes through it, the nature trail continues there and passes the mountain, and the cycling and hiking route runs through the village. These differences can help you compare routes by distance, route type and connection to the village.

Haniperk and Svobodná Hora

The Haniperk observation tower stands on Svobodná Hora. It is 24.5 m high; the mountain lies 640 m above sea level. These figures refer to different things: the height of the structure and the elevation of the mountain. There are 110 steps to the viewing platform, giving you a concrete indication of the climb. From Haniperk, the view extends across a panorama of the Šumava and takes in the three South Bohemian royal towns of Vodňany, Písek and České Budějovice. Svobodná Hora is therefore a shared point of reference: the nature trail passes it, and Haniperk stands on it. The remains of medieval gold mining are also found on the same mountain. Here, views and historical traces come together.

Local History and Leisure

Vodňanské Svobodné Hory was one of three small settlements that arose on the mountain slopes in the 18th century. The village is therefore part of a small group of settlements. The settlements’ origins in the 18th century came considerably later than the medieval gold mining on Svobodná Hora; the two topics offer different historical perspectives on the area. Horse riding is also among the leisure activities associated with Vodňanské Svobodné Hory. If you plan to include this activity in your stay, check the arrangements in advance.
