Volyně: Fortress, Churches and Trails
Accommodation in Volyně
If you’re looking for a hotel in Volyně, you can plan your trip around architectural history, exhibitions or outdoor activities. The town brings together a range of themes: a fortress with a museum, religious buildings from several periods and trails around the Chapel of the Guardian Angel. This lets you plan your stay according to your interests without grouping the individual sights and activities into a single tour.
Fortress and Museum
The core of Volyně Fortress dates to the late 13th century. Most of the surviving masonry, however, was built only at the end of the 15th century. On the north side of the courtyard, a defensive wall with a moat has been preserved; it includes a hexagonal corner tower bastion from around 1470. The different dates show that the fortress combines construction phases from several centuries.
The town museum is housed in the fortress and is open year-round. Check the current visitor arrangements before your trip. Permanent exhibitions include the architectural history of the fortress, Volyně in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and painted folk furniture from the Pošumaví region. Individual displays may change. If you’re particularly interested in architectural history, you can connect the exhibition content with the surviving parts of the fortress.
Churches and Historic Spaces
The Gothic Church of All Saints is in the centre of Volyně. It is a single-nave building with a rectangular nave and a smaller square presbytery. The present-day presbytery is believed to have been built in the first quarter of the 14th century; 1327 is considered a possible date.
The Church of the Transfiguration represents a different period: this late Renaissance building was constructed between 1580 and 1618 with financial support from master butcher Matěj Drška. Remnants of early Baroque frescoes have survived. The cemetery surrounding the church has art-historically significant tombstones from the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The Jewish cemetery is separate, in the Hradčany district; its tombstones date back to the 17th century.
The synagogue is also an important part of the town’s history. Built between 1838 and 1840 in the Empire style on the site of the new Jewish ghetto, it is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The protected complex also includes the former rabbi’s house, now used by the art school.
Exhibitions and Cultural Venues
The Old Renaissance Town Hall houses a long-term exhibition in authentic historic rooms. It explores regional stories from the 16th to the 18th century, including the Knights Hospitaller of Strakonice and the Provostry of St Vitus. Check the current access arrangements before visiting. The exhibition complements the fortress’s architectural history with regional themes from a later period.
An unusual cultural venue is the Na shledanou Gallery. It was established in 2010 in a funeral hall that had originally been built in the 1980s but was never completed or put into operation. The more recent history of an unfinished building’s use is therefore also part of Volyně’s cultural story.
Walking and Cycling
The Chapel of the Guardian Angel stands above Volyně at an elevation of 528 metres. It was built in 1858 to designs by local architect Josef Niklas. The circular trail at the chapel is about three kilometres long. On the way from Volyně to the chapel, you’ll also come across the Andělíček nature trail, which has two stops.
For a longer cycling trip, the Golden Route (Volyňka) offers a different scale: it is 47 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty and described as suitable for trekking bikes. It runs through Volyně between Čkyně and Strakonice. The route and the trail around the chapel differ considerably in length and activity, which can help you decide whether to focus your trip on a short walk or a longer bike ride.
