Anyone planning a trip to Chožov can explore its cultural history and natural features separately: churches, chapels and historic traces span several centuries. Třtěnské stráně and Bílé stráně offer their own natural highlights. As you plan, consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.

Landscape and Nature

Chožovský vrch, 350 m high, rises above the municipality. Remains of a fortification can still be seen on its summit; their origin is unknown. The mountain’s name is thus associated with a specific historical trace, although its origin has not been established. For visitors interested in history and landscape, this unanswered question is itself a distinctive aspect of the place.

The Třtěnské stráně protected area was designated on December 20, 2002, in the cadastral area of Třtěno. It is an important habitat for day-flying butterflies. The so-called Bílé stráně, with their warmth-loving flora, also lie northeast of Třtěno. The two natural features can be distinguished by the characteristics described: day-flying butterflies are the main feature of Třtěnské stráně, while warmth-loving flora is characteristic of Bílé stráně.

Churches and Historic Traces

The present-day church in Chožov was built in 1838 and does not have a specific architectural style. An earlier church in Chožov had a Baroque appearance, though some of its building elements indicate that it was very old. Thus, a Baroque form and evidence of older elements are part of the account of the earlier church, while no specific style is given for the present-day church.

The Church of Saint Michael the Archangel is also connected with an earlier ecclesiastical event: the brothers Jan and Záviš of Chodžov appointed priests to it between 1370 and 1379. This date range refers to the appointment of the priests; the present-day church, by contrast, was built in 1838. The two dates therefore relate to different aspects of the church’s history.

Mnichovský Týnec and Třtěno

Mnichovský Týnec, a district of Chožov, is first mentioned in 1341 and was originally owned by the Cistercian monastery in Osek. The Chapel of Saint Wenceslas was built in 1714. The present-day chapel in Mnichovský Týnec dates from the second half of the 19th century and is Neo-Gothic. Visitors interested in culture will find several historical dates here, along with a clearly specified architectural style.

Třtěno is home to a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1722. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary was built there in 1870 at the municipality’s expense. The architectural heritage also includes a small Baroque château with a chapel inside. It is now in very poor condition.
