Hop fields, historic buildings, and archaeological sites offer different cultural perspectives on a trip to Louny District. Panenský Týnec combines a monastery complex with varied countryside; Žatec is known for its hop-growing heritage. Castles, a fortress, and an open-air museum add architectural and settlement history to the picture. You can tailor your stay to the themes that interest you most.

Hop-Growing Landscapes and Protected Buildings

Panenský Týnec lies in Džbán Nature Park. The surrounding area features forests, steep slopes, ridges, rocks, streams, ponds, fields, and hop gardens; the view extends to the Bohemian Central Highlands. The monastery complex also defines the town: it is protected as a cultural monument and listed in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Žatec and the Landscape of Saaz Hops encompasses rural hop fields and the villages of Stekník and Trnovany, as well as Žatec’s historic town center. Rising above historic hop fields that are still in use, Stekník Château is a striking landmark. This important Rococo building has an Italian-style terraced garden. One of its four guided tours ends at the Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. The château also has a hop-themed exhibition in its cellar; the terraced garden offers a separate visitor experience.

Another hop-related stop is Žatec’s Chrám Chmele a Piva. The building was formerly a hop warehouse and kiln, and served its original purpose for a hundred years from 1890. A guided tour takes you through a maze among hop bales and into a sulfur chamber.

Castles and Archaeological Traces

Nový Hrad was built between 1465 and 1474 above Jimlín and Zeměchy, on the route between Louny and Žatec. The castle is open to visitors and offers several tours. The open-air museum Archeoskanzen Březno, at an important archaeological site, offers a glimpse into the region’s archaeological past. It features reconstructions from the Neolithic, Iron Age, Migration Period, and Early Slavic period. Archaeological experiments and prehistoric activities round out the visit. Březno is also associated with nearly continuous settlement from 5000 BC to the 10th century AD.

Nature Trails, Château Park, and Getting There

Steppe areas can be found at Raná and on the slopes of nearby volcanic hills. The Úpatím Rané educational trail is two kilometers long, intended for walkers, and rated easy. In Krásný Dvůr, you can visit the château park independently and without a guide throughout the year. Advance reservations are required for interior tours. The château park and courtyard are wheelchair accessible; the parking lot is about 30 meters from the château.

You can also plan your trip to Krásný Dvůr using specific transport links: buses from Podbořany, Žatec, and Chomutov serve the town; it is about a 15-minute walk from the stop to the château. Seasonal trains operated by Doupovské dráhy stop about a 20-minute walk away. As train services and guided tours may vary by season, check the latest visitor information before making plans.

For cyclists, Archeoskanzen Březno is connected to a yellow-marked hiking trail and Cycle Route 6. Stekník Château is also on Cycle Route 6, which runs from Žatec via Stekník toward Hradiště, Strkovice, Mradice, Skupice, and Březno u Postoloprt. These two places offer different points of reference for a tour focused on hop-growing landscapes and archaeology.
