Deštnice: Traces of Hops Between Baroque and Nature Park
Accommodation in Deštnice
Deštnice lies in Džbán Nature Park and is surrounded by extensive coniferous and mixed forests, interspersed with fields and hop gardens. At the same time, hop research, church architecture and railway engineering have shaped the town’s history. If you are considering Deštnice for a hotel stay, these different themes offer concrete points of reference for planning your trip.
Hop Growing and Research in Deštnice
Records from the late 17th and early 18th centuries document hop growing in Deštnice. After phylloxera destroyed European vineyards, hops remained the most important crop here. Records from the 18th and 19th centuries ranked hops from Deštnice among the highest-quality in the entire region. The history thus spans everything from early cultivation to a well-established breeding tradition.
A breeding station for cereals and hops was established in Deštnice in 1925. From January 1, 1926, Karel Osvald led the breeding work at the agricultural experimental station; the first hop selection work began under his direction in 1927. Selective breeding of Osvald’s hop clones helped stabilize the quality of Czech hops. Three hop clones for different soil types bear the name Dr. Osvald.
The Hop Museum is located in a farm complex, in a former hop kiln. It presents the history of the hop research station since 1926, as well as a photo gallery showing work in hop cultivation. The collection includes technical equipment, an original furnace and hop stamps used for the quarter. Research history, cultivation techniques and photographic records are thus presented side by side. If you are planning a visit, please check current visiting arrangements in advance.
Church Architecture and a Vanished Settlement
The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is a late Baroque building dating from 1783. Its floor plan is rectangular and single-nave; the presbytery ends in a semicircle. The high altar also has its own history: originally designed in the Rococo style, it was remodeled in the 19th century. The details about the building and the altar thus describe two different aspects of the church—its architectural form and changes to its furnishings.
The vanished settlement of Nedvídkov, located southeast of Deštnice, is part of the area’s earlier history. It is also known by the names Nedvíkov and Medvídkov. The settlement included a fortress and a manorial farmstead; it disappeared during the 15th century under the rule of the Lobkowicz family. The different names refer to the same historic place.
Landscape and Hiking Trail
The landscape around Deštnice alternates between extensive coniferous and mixed forests, fields and hop gardens. Wooded areas and agricultural land therefore come together in the local scenery. This gives the destination a connection to the nature park landscape as well as to the history of hop growing, without suggesting that the two themes tell the same story.
A blue-marked hiking trail runs through Sádek, a part of Deštnice, from Veletice railway station via Pravda to Líšťany. The route offers a practical way to plan an outing with several named stops. Check the trail markings before setting off.
Bridges and Railway Culvert
Among Deštnice’s engineering features are two bridges built one above the other: a road bridge crosses a stream, with a railway bridge above it. There is also a railway culvert in the railway embankment within the municipality. The relevant section of the line dates from 1870.
The culvert is a small, one-meter-wide viaduct tunnel. It supports the railway line and also channels water from a forest plot through the tunnel and into a ravine. Unlike the bridges built one above the other, this structure combines a supporting function with water management. Alongside its hop-growing and architectural history, these two engineering examples give Deštnice another distinct theme of its own.
