Encovany: Cultural Monuments and Local Life

Encovany can be viewed through two cultural lenses: its castle and the Chapel of the Holy Guardian Angels, and its local festivals and competitions. The buildings offer different perspectives as cultural monuments; the events showcase a variety of community activities. Castle and Chapel

Encovany Castle stands at the heart of the village of the same name and is a protected cultural monument. The Chapel of the Holy Guardian Angels is also a protected cultural monument, and has been since 1958. It is a small religious building constructed in the Neoclassical style between 1815 and 1855.

The key difference between the buildings lies in their points of reference: the castle is defined by its location in the village center, while the chapel’s construction period and Neoclassical style shape its architectural character. This gives you different perspectives if you are interested in local history or the architectural history of a religious building.

The chapel is currently open to the public only during community events. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether such an event is taking place during your stay.

Festivals and Competitions

The Sousedská slavnost was held for the fifth time on September 9, 2023. That year, it moved from the blockhouse to the village center. The program included a traditional demonstration of firefighting equipment by the volunteer fire brigade of the municipality of Polepy, featuring three emergency vehicles. There was also an educational first-aid demonstration, with participants able to practice on a training mannequin. The change of location and these program items describe the specific 2023 edition.

O pohár Vodníka Encovanského is described as another Encovany tradition. Children and adults competed in different sections of the competition. This format differs from a festival program such as the Sousedská slavnost: the competition and its separate sections for the two groups are the focus here.

Čarodějnice is considered the first social and cultural event of the new season in Encovany. At Encovanský dětský den 2022, children walked along a pond and completed various tasks at a total of eight stations. The route along the pond and the activity stations distinguish this children’s program from the competition and festival formats.
