Litoměřice District lies in the Central Elbe region, where the Labe and Ohře rivers meet. River landscapes, vineyards and the volcanic hills of the České středohoří give the area a variety of character. Your trip can also take different forms: cycling and hiking trails, viewpoints, or historic places and buildings.

River Landscapes, Vineyards and Views

Porta Bohemica forms a scenic gorge along the Elbe. Vineyards line the stretch of the Labe from Litoměřice through Žalhostice to Velké Žernoseky. Here, wine-growing and striking natural formations meet in a river landscape. The volcanic České středohoří is known for its sweeping panoramas and adds a distinctive landscape feature of its own.

Around Doksany, the meanders of the Ohře and the landscape of Dolní Poohří are part of the scenery, along with views towards the main peaks of the České středohoří. Milešovka is the highest mountain in the range. From there, distant views extend towards the Polabská nížina and the Krušné hory; other views take in the České středohoří, the Polabská nížina and the ridge of the Krušné hory. River landscapes and mountain ridges thus offer distinct landscape themes side by side.

Cycling and Hiking Trails in the District

The Labská magistrála is the district’s main cycling corridor. It runs along the Labe and passes through Velké Žernoseky, Žalhostice and Litoměřice. By contrast, the eastern branch of the Golden Trail connects Úštěk, the area around Třebušín, Kalich, Panna, Litýš, Kamýk and Velké Žernoseky. The two routes can be distinguished by their described courses: the Labská magistrála follows the river corridor, while the Golden Trail links several places and historic destinations.

Individual trails also have clearly named destinations. From Mnetěš, a hiking trail leads to the summit of Říp. A yellow-marked trail from the Lukovsko junction leads to the Opičí hlava sandstone formation. These specific destinations help you choose outings based on the landscape or natural features you want to see, without combining the different trails into a single route.

Historic Places and Buildings

Litoměřice, Terezín and Úštěk have urban heritage reserves or heritage zones. In Terezín, the town’s history is linked to a fortress founded in 1780 and considered an example of European bastion fortification. It includes several dozen kilometres of underground mine galleries, which visitors can still see.

Doksany Monastery was founded in 1144–1145 as a Premonstratensian convent with a Romanesque basilica. Ploskovice Chateau was built as a summer residence in the early 18th century and later became the residence of Ferdinand V. On the ruins of Házmburk, the accessible White Tower offers panoramic views. These buildings reflect different historical themes: the founding of a monastery and Romanesque architecture, the history of a chateau, and fortress and castle ruins.

Time by the Water and Practical Information

Žernosecké Lake has beaches and opportunities for swimming, sunbathing and water sports. Conditions for recreational activities can vary seasonally. When planning your stay, you can therefore consider this as a distinct theme alongside the landscapes, trails and historic destinations.

Visitors can reach the district by road and rail, as well as via the Labe transport corridor. The Litoměřice Information Centre can arrange guided town tours and visits to the Kalich viewing tower and the underground exhibition Důl Richard v proměnách času. As booking arrangements may change, it is advisable to enquire in advance. To choose a base for your stay, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: river landscapes and cycling routes, views from the hills, time by the water, or culture and architecture. This way, you can shape your plans around the experiences that genuinely interest you.
