Hrobce – Elbe, Cycling Route and History
Accommodation in Hrobce
If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Hrobce, the Elbe, cycling routes or the town’s history may influence your choice of destination. These topics offer different perspectives on Hrobce: the stretch of river and Šán Island highlight the landscape, while the cycling route, railway station and buildings help you plan your trip.
The Elbe and Šán Island
The stretch of the Elbe within the cadastral area of Hrobce is classified as ZW B and flows gently and calmly. Šán Island lies near Hrobce. It is about 1 km long and around 60 m wide at its widest point. As it is considerably longer than it is wide, its approximate dimensions are easy to sum up.
Cycling
Cycling Route A2 follows the Elbe from the south to Hrobce, where it ends. Hrobce is also on Route 2A of the Elbe Trail between Roudnice nad Labem and Terezín; this route passes through Židovice and Libotenice. The distinction is useful for orientation: Hrobce is the endpoint of A2, while the named towns are part of the route of 2A. The Elbe cycling route is one of the four main cycling routes in the Ústí nad Labem Region. Check current route conditions before setting off, as they may change.
Getting here and finding your way around
Hrobce railway station is on Czech railway line 090. This line connects Prague with Ústí nad Labem and continues on to Germany. Check up-to-date information for specific train connections and timetables. Hrobce is also on the main route between Roudnice nad Labem and Terezín, in the direction of Litoměřice and Lovosice. The railway station and a main route described across several towns can both help you plan your trip.
History and buildings
Hrobce is first mentioned in the so-called founding charter of the Benedictine monastery in Kladruby. The charter is attributed to 1115, but is considered a forgery from the late 12th century. The year 1390 is also associated with the town: at that time, Hrobce is mentioned as part of the Archbishop’s estate of Roudnice nad Labem. The two references highlight different aspects—the early mention, whose authenticity has been critically assessed, and the later reference in connection with the Roudnice estate.
The Baroque chapel in Hrobce is a building that can be dated with certainty. It has a small bell tower and was built in 1744. Following the floods of 2002, the chapel was reconstructed in 2004. The Klementova factory villa at No. 99/2 in Hrobce is designated as a building of architectural value. The chapel and the factory villa thus represent two different aspects of local history: the chapel’s architecture and restoration, and the villa’s architectural significance.
