Accommodation in Koštice
Koštice offers specific points of interest for a range of interests: religious buildings and memorial sites, the history of Ortův Mlýn on the Ohře, a nature trail and botanical highlights. If you are looking for a hotel in Koštice, these themes can help you decide which aspects of the village you would like to shape your stay.
Baroque buildings and memorial sites
The parish church of Saint Anthony of Padua stands at the centre of the village square. This late Baroque religious building dates from 1752. The church is listed as an immovable cultural monument and is classified as an example of 18th-century Baroque architecture. Its architectural form, date and location give it a clear connection to the village centre.
The Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, dating from 1729, stands in the lower village square. It is another monument with a specific date, but a distinct place in the village. A later chapter in the village’s building history is told by the Neo-Gothic-Baroque Chapel Kaplička u přívozu: it was built in 1846 by the Zinke family of house no. 14. The dates place the statue, parish church and chapel in different periods of the village’s history.
The Zvonička u přívozu bell tower also commemorates a specific event. It was built in January 2014 in memory of the mass tragedy of 1764. People returning from a church service drowned while crossing the river. Koštice’s architectural and artistic monuments are thus joined by memorial sites connected to a tragic historical event.
Ortův Mlýn: mill history and electricity supply
Ortův Mlýn links industrial history with a present-day function: the mill is considered the first automatic mill in Bohemia and is now a hydroelectric power station. The present-day site on the Ohře is documented in a written record from 1574. The mill’s history can therefore be understood through both an early written reference and its current use as a hydroelectric power station.
The former operation also included the Ortův Mlýn power station. It once supplied electricity to the mill, street lighting throughout Koštice and local households. This former role in supplying electricity adds another dimension to the mill: it was not only a place of production but also played a part in the village’s electricity supply.
A nature trail with a named route
The short Koštice–Křesín nature trail was created in 2012. It starts at the church in Koštice, passes through the lower village square and follows the Ohře through Želevice and the wetlands near Koštice to Křesín. The start, intermediate sections and endpoint are all clearly identified. Unlike a visit to a single monument, the nature trail leads from the village centre towards the river and through wetlands.
Nature, art and cycling
The Koštice Natural Monument is botanically notable for having the largest population of black sedge (Carex melanostachya) in Bohemia. Subhalophytic plant communities also occur in waterlogged, loose soils in flooded meadows. This offers a specific point of interest for visitors interested in the local plant life.
Another artistic highlight is the modern abstract sculpture Život – Letnice. Woodcarver Jan Švadlenka created it from a dead tree in 2013. Its material and abstract form make it a different artistic subject alongside the older religious buildings and monuments.
Lávka svobody is a simple bridge over a small millrace for pedestrians and cyclists. Karfíkův dvůr offers bicycle rental with tourist equipment, including child seats and child trailers. Rentals must be arranged in advance. Depending on your interests, you can focus your plans on cultural history, nature or cycling.
