Kozly: Discover Nature and History
Accommodation in Kozly
A stay in Kozly can combine a look at local history with distinctive natural attractions. St. Martin’s Church, a statue in the village square, and the history of the vanished fortress offer different insights into the past. Tobiášův vrch and Číčov are known for protected plant life and geological features. On your trip, you can choose between historical landmarks and landscapes.
Church, Village Square, and Fortress History
St. Martin’s Church was originally Gothic and was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1717. The building therefore brings together two distinct architectural phases: the original Gothic church and its later Baroque remodeling. The Chotek family crypt is also located in the church. The building’s history and the family memorial are thus different aspects of local history, both rooted in the same place.
A statue of St. John of Nepomuk, dating from the second quarter of the 18th century, stands in the village square. Its date marks a later point in the 18th century than the 1717 renovation. It adds another historical landmark in the town to the picture of St. Martin’s Church.
The fortress of Kozly is considered to have vanished. It is documented from 1382 and was abolished in 1623. The two dates mark different stages in its history: 1382 is its first recorded mention, while 1623 marks the end of the fortress. Together with the church and statue, it offers a way to explore Kozly’s history while distinguishing between architectural development, local landmarks, and the vanished fortress.
Steppe Flora and Geological Features
The Tobiášův vrch Natural Monument protects a fragment of a rare steppe ecosystem with numerous endangered plant species. It lies within the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area. Its protected flora includes spring pheasant’s eye, Czech pasqueflower, open pasqueflower, Russian feather grass, and small-flowered grape hyacinth. The protected status and the specifically named species give this natural attraction a clear focus: a rare steppe fragment and its protected flora.
Číčov has a different natural history, also connected with plant life: it is an erosional remnant formed by volcanic activity. Its underlying terrain is home to distinctive protected plant life. While Tobiášův vrch is described primarily in terms of its steppe ecosystem and species, Číčov brings together volcanic origins, erosion, and protected flora.
Trails and Landscape
A field path near Kozly passes close to Tobiášův vrch through an area of natural significance. It is connected to a biocorridor and to elements of the Territorial System of Ecological Stability (ÚSES). This landscape attraction therefore involves ecological connections as well as individual protected species.
At Číčov, access from the road is via a walkable tourist trail; the site is more than 250 meters from the road. Conditions on local trails may vary. The distance from the road and the described trail are therefore practical details to consider when planning your visit.
A Historical Wine Delivery
The history of past supplies adds another dimension to Kozly. In the past, the village supplied wine to the Prague Chapter administration; the wine came from Chrámce. This historical connection adds an economic aspect to the architectural and natural attractions, linking Kozly, Chrámce, and the Prague Chapter administration through the wine deliveries of the time.
