Krásný Dvůr: Castle and Landscape Park
Accommodation in Krásný Dvůr
Krásný Dvůr Castle and its landscape park offer different ways to plan a visit: inside the castle, a public tour takes you through historic rooms, while outside, the park landscape and individual structures shape the site. They also date from different periods. The castle acquired its present appearance in the early 18th century; the landscape park was laid out later and covers almost 100 hectares.
Castle Rooms and Park History
Following an extensive renovation between 1720 and 1724, Krásný Dvůr Castle acquired its present appearance. The public tour covers 11 rooms. Most of the rooms open to the public are furnished with period furnishings. If you would also like to see the interiors, check the current tour arrangements before your trip.
The castle park was laid out by Jan Rudolf Czernin between 1783 and 1793 and is one of the first landscape parks in Bohemia. It was therefore created several decades after the castle was renovated. At nearly 100 hectares, the park offers a different scale from the tour of the rooms: here, you can take in the design as an expansive landscape, while the castle tour focuses on the interior.
Structures and Distinctive Park Features
Named structures include the Gloriet, also called Malý templ or Venušin chrámek, and the Chinese Pavilion. The Gloriet stands on a high rise above a pond. The Chinese Pavilion has an octagonal floor plan and was intended to evoke a Chinese pagoda. The park thus brings together different architectural forms and points of reference.
Poustevníkova rokle is also accessible via a structure: the gorge can be reached from a large Neo-Gothic stone bridge. Another feature of the park is the so-called Goethe’s Oak. It is estimated to be 1,000 years old and now survives only as a torso. Its name and actual condition go together: what remains is not a fully preserved tree, but the remnant of its trunk.
Explore the Park Independently
TourStories’ mobile app began offering an interactive digital guide to the castle park on May 1, 2021. The park guide includes audio commentary, a photo gallery, historic views and park maps, drone videos, and music recordings. With the TourStories guide, visitors can explore the park at their own pace. Since availability and digital features may change, check the app before your trip.
The park’s features offer different starting points for a visit: you might be interested in its landscape history, individual structures, or distinctive natural features. The digital guide offers a range of media, while the public castle tour focuses specifically on the rooms inside the building.
Getting There and Planning an Overnight Stay
Parking is available about 30 metres from the castle gate. Check the latest access information before setting out, as parking arrangements may change. If you are planning to travel by train, check the current seasonal timetable.
