Levín brings together ceramic history, historic buildings and a marked hiking route. This offers a choice of different trip-planning priorities: workshop visits, architectural and local history, or a hike to Sedlo. If you are looking for a hotel in Levín, the purpose of your trip can help you decide which of these to focus on during your stay.

Ceramics and Workshop Visits

House No. 10 is the last surviving pottery workshop in Levín. On recurring open-workshop days, you can visit the workshop and its historic kiln and work at the potter’s wheel. The individual ceramic workshops in Levín can be visited during fairs and events, or at any time by prior telephone arrangement.

The history of ceramics goes beyond a single workshop: Levín may be the only place in Czechia with an uninterrupted ceramic production tradition spanning 600 years. Historical Levín ceramics from the 17th and 18th centuries featured floral motifs applied with white slip to reddish-brown clay and covered with a transparent lead glaze. The long continuity and the specific surface decoration show two different aspects of the same craft tradition.

Events in Levín

Since 2021, Levíno, held in September, has been one of the events in Levín. It is dedicated to regional winemakers and refreshments; dates and vendors may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the exact date in advance. At the Levín Český jarmark, ceramics are combined with demonstrations of other crafts and a cultural program. The program may vary.

Church, Bell Tower and Castle

The Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross is listed as an immovable cultural monument and is a circular central-plan building. It was founded in 1788, burned down three years later, and was rebuilt in 1798. Its circular ground plan and the sequence of its founding, fire and reconstruction give the church two distinct historical features.

The Levín bell tower also combines architectural history with a surviving feature: its ground floor was built in 1699 using masonry from the castle. There is a viewing platform inside the bell tower. Archaeological finds indicate that Levín Castle existed in the second half of the 13th century; it may have been abandoned in the 14th century. Near the summit of the rocky spur, remains of a fortification wall and part of an unidentified square structure have been preserved.

Hiking to Sedlo

A 9-kilometer hiking route to Sedlo can start directly in Levín. It first follows the blue trail markers and then the green ones. This specifies both the destination and the order of the trail markers for planning the route. Check the markers and trail conditions before setting out.
