Libčeves combines a distinctive church and its own castle history with examples of cultural events and a landscape landmark south of the town. This offers various themes when choosing a destination: historic building phases, the history of Zámek Libčeves and a steppe meadow on Mlýnský vrch. If you are looking for a hotel in Libčeves, these highlights give an objective impression of the town’s cultural and landscape points of interest.

Church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist

The Church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist is a distinctive landmark in Libčeves. The late Romanesque building dates from the 1230s to 1240s; the single-nave church nave dates from the second quarter of the same century. The presbytery was built at the turn of the 1450s and 1460s. These dates describe different building phases and parts of the church. More than two centuries therefore lie between the church nave and the presbytery.

“Single-nave” describes the layout of the church nave; the presbytery refers to a different part of the building. The terms therefore provide different points of reference: stylistic classification, spatial layout and dates each answer different questions about the architecture. It is precisely the combination of a late Romanesque building and a later presbytery phase that makes the church a tangible subject for anyone interested in architectural history.

The History of Zámek Libčeves

Another historical thread leads to Zámek Libčeves. The original fortress was located near the Romanesque church. The Žerotín family built the castle in the 14th century at its present location on the hill. The early fortress near the church and the later castle on the hill therefore stand side by side as distinct stages in the town’s history.

Cultural Events in Libčeves

The Libčevecké slavnosti on 19 July 2025 featured a cultural program, refreshments at stalls and in the restaurant, market stalls, face painting for children, a raffle, a bouncy castle, carousel rides and other attractions. This edition thus brought together a cultural program, food and drink, and a variety of entertainment.

The Kinematograf bratří Čadíků offered a different kind of event: from 28 to 31 July 2026, film screenings were held after dark at the pond in Libčeves. The two dated examples differ in format: the slavnosti combined several offerings, while the Kinematograf focused on evening film screenings.

Mlýnský vrch South of Libčeves

A nature description last updated in 2016 characterizes Mlýnský vrch, south of Libčeves, as a low basalt hill with an extensive steppe meadow on its southwest slope. Rare and protected plants are mentioned there. This adds a landscape theme to the architectural history and cultural events: the description focuses on basalt, the slope’s orientation and plant life.
