Podbořanský Rohozec combines the wooded foothills of the Doupov Mountains with several specifically identified cultural landmarks. The village is home to the Chapel of St. Notburga and the Jewish cemetery; the Budiš fortification and the Křečov Castle ruins add further historical points of interest. A long-distance cycle route also passes through the village. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether to focus on the landscape, archaeological and architectural history, or a longer cycling route.

Natural Environment and Landscape

The village lies between the wooded foothills of the Doupov Mountains. The cadastral area of Podbořanský Rohozec lies within the part of the Hradiště Special Area of Conservation that belongs to the Louny District. This designation applies to the cadastral area. It should be distinguished from the larger protected area of the Doupov Mountains Special Protection Area: this includes the village and is a breeding ground for 148 bird species. The two statements about protected areas refer to different spatial scales. The wooded setting describes the village’s landscape, while the information about the protected areas concerns a larger region. If nature is your main consideration, this distinction helps you separate the local landscape from the regional context.

Chapel of St. Notburga

The façade of the Chapel of St. Notburga features statues of Saint Notburga, Saint Procopius, and Saint Isidore. The three figures give the chapel a specific architectural focal point for a cultural-history itinerary. Ecclesiastically, it is a subsidiary church of the parish of Nepomyšl. Regular services are not held there. If you are planning to attend a particular church service, check what is currently possible in advance.

Archaeological and Historical Traces

About one kilometre southwest of Podbořanský Rohozec, near the Střelnice forester’s lodge, lies the circular Budiš fortification, also known as a rondel. Its shape distinguishes it from castle ruins such as Křečov. Budiš was probably destroyed during the invasion of a crusader army around 1421. The site thus has a specifically identified location and form, along with a cautiously worded historical interpretation.

The ruins of Křečov Castle are hidden in the forest between Podbořanský Rohozec and Nepomyšl. Below the castle, the ruins of a mill with a sawmill have been preserved. The historical setting described here therefore includes evidence of earlier use as well as the remains of the castle.

There is also a Jewish cemetery in the village. About 90 gravestones remain there, and their condition varies. Both the approximate number and the differing states of preservation are relevant when considering the cemetery as part of the village’s historic character.

Cycling and Trip Planning

National Cycle Route No. 35 passes through Podbořanský Rohozec and connects Plzeň with Měděnec over a total distance of 125 kilometres. This is the length of the entire route between these endpoints, not a local loop. For planning purposes, this is a different scale from the Budiš site, located about one kilometre to the southwest: one is a long-distance route, the other the location of a single cultural landmark. If you plan to ride the cycle route, check road conditions before setting out.
