If you are looking for a hotel in Pohorice, the village’s history may help you choose your destination. The focus is on the historic Formanská magistrála, stone milestones and a war memorial. Together, these themes lead from a long-distance route to specific local landmarks. The village’s former name and its first recorded mention in 1340 add to the picture. If you would like to combine your stay with a cultural focus, Pohorice offers several distinct historical perspectives: transport history, the development of the village and remembrance of the First World War.

The Formanská magistrála and stone milestones

The historic Formanská magistrála ran through Pohorice. From Prague, the route continued via Pohorice to Dresden, Leipzig and Berlin. This places the village along a long-distance route. A former inn at house number 37 remains in Pohorice from the time of the magistrála. Next to the former inn is the surviving remnant of a stone milestone, about 1.5 metres high. Another stone milestone stands north of Pohorice, roughly 1.5 kilometres away. The two measurements describe different aspects: about 1.5 metres is the height of the surviving remnant beside the inn, while about 1.5 kilometres is the approximate distance of the northern milestone from Pohorice. This makes it possible to distinguish the two stone route markers by their locations and the respective measurements.

Village history and name

Pohořice is considered older in origin than Martiněves. It was formerly also called Podhořice. The first recorded mention dates to 1340; at that time, Pohořice belonged to the holdings of the Augustinian monastery in Roudnice nad Labem. The comparison with Martiněves and the year 1340 emphasize different things: the former concerns relative origins, while the year dates the first recorded mention. Together with the former name Podhořice, these details offer a perspective on the village’s history alongside the traces of the historic Formanská magistrála.

War memorial on the village square

A war memorial stands on the village square of Pohořice in Martiněves, commemorating those who fell in the First World War of 1914–1918 from Martiněves, Pohořice and Charvatce. It was unveiled on 7 September 1924. The four-sided monument is made of granite; the names of the fallen are carved into three of its sides. Its dedication names the three communities and the period of the war, while its shape, material and inscriptions describe its design. The memorial can therefore be understood both through the people it honours and its specific construction. The remembrance at the village square represents a different cultural and historical aspect from the historic route through Pohorice.

Another historic route

The historic Stará formanská magistrála runs along the edge of Pohořice. This differs from the location of the historic Formanská magistrála, which ran through Pohořice. This spatial distinction is useful for understanding the village’s history: one route is located along the edge, while the other is described as passing through the village. This makes it possible to distinguish the two routes mentioned.
