Slavětín: Churches, Chapel and Landscape Trail
Accommodation in Slavětín
When looking for a hotel in Slavětín, it makes sense to start with the purpose of your trip: would you mainly like to discover architecture and history, or are you more interested in the landscape along a nature trail? The town combines protected religious buildings and accessible cultural history with a route between Slavětín and Peruc. Seasonal events may also play a part in choosing your travel dates.
Church of Saint James the Greater
The Church of Saint James the Greater is an Early Gothic building. Its architectural features include a long chancel with a polygonal end and a hall-like, three-aisled nave. The walls of the chancel depict scenes from the lives of saints. The combination of the building’s form and its wall paintings gives the church interior a distinctive architectural and artistic character.
The protected complex includes more than just the church itself. It also encompasses the former cemetery, the perimeter wall with two gates, the steps in front of it and a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. The elements surrounding the church are therefore also part of the historic complex. If you are interested in architecture, you can view the Early Gothic site as a whole rather than focusing solely on the interior.
Chapel of the Visitation and its furnishings
The Chapel of the Visitation stands above Slavětín, in a location with wide views over the landscape. It was completed in 1677 and built as an octagonal central-plan structure. This makes it a clearly distinct architectural counterpart to the Church of Saint James: there, the long chancel and three-aisled nave define the building, while the chapel is based on an octagonal central form.
Details from the chapel’s history have also been preserved inside. Inscriptions and fragments bearing coats of arms from 1683 and 1747 are the last surviving remnants of what was once a rich interior. If you would like to compare architectural forms and furnishings during your visit, the church and chapel offer different, clearly identifiable points of interest.
Naučná stezka between Slavětín and Peruc
If you would rather focus on a route through the landscape, the Naučná stezka offers a route about 7.5 kilometres long between Slavětín and Peruc. It passes through fields, meadows and forests. The nature trail has nine stops, and there is a separate information board in the settlement of Kystra. The board in Kystra is distinct from the nine stops.
The route offers a different way to experience the surroundings than visiting the individual religious buildings: rather than looking at architectural features in one place, it takes you through changing landscapes. Its approximate length and named endpoints give you a concrete basis for planning, without specifying a particular walking time or difficulty level. This lets you decide whether to plan your stay mainly around the buildings or the nature trail.
Konstantin Biebl Exhibition
The Konstantin Biebl Exhibition opened in 1955 and reopened in 1979 after the building was reconstructed. Located in the so-called birth house, it commemorates the poet Konstantin Biebl, his uncle, the poet Arnošt Ráž (1884–1925), and Biebl’s friend, the prose writer Karel Konrád (1899–1971). The exhibition thus connects literary history with three individuals and their relationships to one another.
There is a specific access requirement for visiting: the exhibition is open only by prior arrangement with the local municipal office. If you would like to include it in your travel plans, contact the office in advance. This restriction distinguishes a visit to the exhibition from the freely plannable options of a route or an architectural walk.
Annual events
A carnival is traditionally held in Slavětín in spring. The Předjaří v Poohří tourist march also takes place every spring. In summer, you can take part in the Memoriál Stanislava Kučery firefighting sports event; the Slavětínská pouť pilgrimage festival and a football tournament are also held then. Choral concerts are traditionally held in the Church of Saint James the Greater. Harvest celebrations take place every year at Rodinná farma Suchý.
Events are spread across different seasons and take various forms, from the spring march and summer activities to the harvest celebrations. If a particular event is a deciding factor for your trip, check its date in advance. This will help you decide whether to combine your hotel stay with an event or explore Slavětín independently of the event schedule, focusing instead on its buildings, literary history and landscape route.
