Újezdeček: Mining History and Landscape
Accommodation in Újezdeček
Újezdeček combines a local history shaped by mining and glassmaking with walks on reclaimed former spoil heaps and views of the Ore Mountains. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, this combination can help you get a sense of the destination’s character and weigh up your own travel interests.
Dukla, Mining and Glassmaking
Újezdeček’s land-use plan provides for preserving the settlement of Dukla as an integral part of the municipality’s history and as a residential complex of urban-planning value, with a central square. Újezdeček was formerly called Malý Újezd. The character of the settlement was shaped in particular by mining and its direct connection to Teplice, especially in the area of public infrastructure.
The population grew sharply in the second half of the 19th century; this was connected with mining and glassmaking. Lignite mining developed in the cadastral area of Újezdeček in 1880. The history of glassmaking includes the Fischman glassworks, which produced bottles and costume jewellery glass, and the Ascher glassworks, which produced flat glass; both works later closed. This brings two perspectives together: the planned preservation of a residential complex of urban-planning value and the economic development associated with mining and glassmaking. The longer-term population growth in the second half of the 19th century differs in timing from the lignite mining specifically dated to 1880.
Walks and Views
Nature walks are possible on the reclaimed former spoil heaps. Újezdeček offers views of the Ore Mountains. The village square is a specific viewpoint: from there, you can see Milešovka and the more distant Kletečná. This makes it possible to distinguish between two natural highlights: walks on the spoil heaps and mountain views from the village square.
Village Character and Remembrance
Újezdeček has remnants of old farmsteads, old stone walls on buildings, and renovated entrance gates. The contrast between old walls and restored gates brings different architectural details into view. The memorial to the victims of the First and Second World Wars stands on náměstí Boženy Němcové and adds a distinct note of remembrance to the village’s character.
Excursions and Getting Around
Excursions in the direction of Kamenný pahorek are possible from Újezdeček. Nearby, Lake Barbora is located at Kamenný pahorek and is used for diving. This excursion differs from walks on the spoil heaps: diving is the focus here, while the spoil heaps offer a walk in nature. If you plan to visit Barbora, check current access options in advance.
Újezdeček is connected to Teplice’s urban public transport network. Check current services before travelling so you can take this connection into account when planning your trip.
