Dolní Sokolovec: Doubrava, Rocks and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Dolní Sokolovec
Several themes can be distinguished when planning a trip to Dolní Sokolovec: a challenging cycling route passes through the village, while rock formations and the Doubrava Valley offer other points of interest for planning. Access to certain natural areas and climbing areas is also restricted. If you are looking for a hotel in Dolní Sokolovec, this distinction can help you first decide on the purpose of your trip: a longer cycling excursion, or an interest in the river landscape, rocks and views.
Cycling route through Dolní Sokolovec
The 50 km Chotěboř–Havlíčkova Borová–Krucemburk–Podmoklany–Chotěboř cycling route passes through Dolní Sokolovec. It is classified as challenging, runs mostly on roads and is designed for trekking bikes. Taken together, its length, difficulty rating, road layout and intended bicycle type give a clear picture of the route. When choosing a cycling tour, you can compare these features with your own plans rather than focusing only on the section through the village.
The route connects Dolní Sokolovec with a longer ride through several named places. Chotěboř appears as both the starting point and the endpoint in the route name. This makes it possible to distinguish the section through the village from the full 50 km tour: the length and challenging rating refer to the route as a whole.
Doubrava, rock formations and views
The Doubrava flows through the valley for approximately 5 km. Doubravský pilíř and Mikšova skála each reach a height of more than 15 m. Čertův stolek is also among the well-known rock formations: it is one of the best-known and most visited, and offers a view from its summit. The three names point to different ways of choosing a landscape theme: the river and valley, the height of two rocks, or the summit view at Čertův stolek.
The rock formations in the Doubrava Valley are visited mainly by climbers. In the Údolí Doubravy Nature Reserve, climbing on selected rock formations is permitted for members of the Czech Mountaineering Club. The selection of rocks and this membership requirement are important if you are considering making climbing the focus of your trip.
In the area around Dolní Sokolovec, a tourist viewpoint is located between Bílek and Libická Lhotka in a picturesque valley of the Doubrava. It stands on the site of the medieval Sokolovec watchtower, also known as Sokolohrad. This identifies another viewpoint in a different location, in addition to the view from the summit of Čertův stolek.
Písník u Sokolovce: natural monument and access
Písník u Sokolovce is a protected natural monument covering an area of 0.411 ha. The partially flooded former sand quarry preserves a rich population of round-leaved sundew and serves as a breeding refuge for amphibians. It therefore combines a distinctive plant population and importance for amphibians with its former use as a sand quarry.
Under its founding provisions, the natural monument is not open to the public. Do not plan to visit it as a public attraction, and follow the local signs. This access restriction sets Písník apart from the viewpoints and cycling route described above.
Getting there and finding a hotel
Dolní Sokolovec can be reached by bus from Chotěboř or Libice nad Doubravou. For a specific journey, check the timetable for your travel dates. Chotěboř is also named as the starting and ending point of the cycling route; Libice nad Doubravou is another departure point for the bus journey. You can therefore plan the bus and cycling options separately.
For a cycling trip, the route’s length and difficulty, as well as its suitability for trekking bikes, are key considerations. If you are more interested in the landscape and views, the Doubrava Valley, the named rock formations and the viewpoint offer different points of interest.
