Ovesná Lhota offers a scenic connection to the highlands and a local history marked by several memorial sites. Two routes passed through the village in 2016. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these topics separately: the crosses, chapel, and war memorial represent different historical connections, while the routes describe their own paths and destinations.

The Highlands as a Point of Reference

Ovesná Lhota lies on a high plateau in the Českomoravská vrchovina, near Světlá nad Sázavou. Its location sets the landscape scene, while the chapel, crosses, and war memorial offer specific historical points of interest for planning your trip. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first decide whether you would like to focus more on local history or on a hike.

Chapel and War Memorial

The municipal chapel in Ovesná Lhota was built in 1938. On July 24, František Štulpa from Smrdov consecrated the chapel. The war memorial in Ovesná Lhota was unveiled on May 12, 1946, and stands in the center of the village near the chapel. Their proximity helps visitors find both memorial sites, but their dates refer to different events: for the chapel, they relate to its construction and consecration; for the memorial, to its unveiling. This makes it possible to distinguish their respective historical connections without conflating the chapel’s history with the memorial’s commemorative purpose.

Crosses and Tree Plantings

The U Božích muk cross commemorates the soldiers who fell in the Hussite Wars. Another commemorative purpose is associated with the cross in front of the school: it marks the abolition of robot, a duty to perform labor. Two lime trees next to this cross were planted in 1910. The planting is a separate historical reference from the dedication of the cross; its date applies to the lime trees. Another planting of lime trees is associated with the soldiers’ mass grave: four lime trees were planted around the grave in 1919. Location and occasion help distinguish these details: the two lime trees relate to the cross in front of the school, while the planting of four lime trees in 1919 relates to the mass grave.

Hiking Routes with Different Paths

The historical hiking trail “Po stopách Josefa Toufara” passed through Ovesná Lhota in 2016. It then followed a field track toward Kynice and went through the forest below Borovina. The 11-kilometer “Cestou necestou” route also passed through the village that year, continuing to Sázavka railway station. The two trails differ in their stated points of reference: “Po stopách Josefa Toufara” is described in terms of the direction toward Kynice and its field track and forest; “Cestou necestou” has a stated length and a named endpoint. The 11 kilometers apply exclusively to “Cestou necestou.” If you are considering either route for a hike today, check the current trail conditions in advance.
