Poděšín by the Poděšínský potok
Poděšín combines a specific connection to the landscape with a clearly defined local history. The village stretches along both sides of the Poděšínský potok. Historic buildings, a wayside cross and the Strom sculpture add several identifiable landmarks to this setting. This makes it possible to explore the village both through its location by the water and through its history.
The Poděšínský potok is 13.6 kilometres long. Its source areas are near Samotín and in Špitálský les, within the cadastral area of Janovice. These details make the watercourse tangible in two ways: it helps orient you in Poděšín and has named source areas. If you are interested in the landscape, the stream provides a concrete starting point for getting your bearings in the village.
Local history and religious buildings
The first written mention of Poděšín dates from 1233. It is closely connected with the beginnings of the monastery and church in Nížkov. Thus, local history is linked not only to a date but also to a specific connection with the early religious institutions in Nížkov.
Another dated trace is a bell cast in 1708. One side showed Christ on the cross, while the other depicted Saint John of Nepomuk. These two images make the bell a particularly tangible cultural and historical detail: in addition to its age, the figures on its sides are also recorded.
The chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built in 1874 to replace a wooden bell tower erected in 1708. The bell tower and the chapel therefore represent two successive types of building on the same site. Together with the bell, they offer several distinct historical points of reference: a casting date, an earlier bell tower and the later construction of the chapel. The chapel is also a landmark in its own right, with its dedication and building history.
The history of the road and the Strom sculpture
Nejedlův kříž stands on Karbarova cesta. This road once linked Polná, Hrbov and Nížkov. The wayside cross can thus be connected with a historic route between three named places. As you explore Poděšín, this adds the former role of Karbarova cesta to the history of the chapel and the bell.
The Strom sculpture is another precisely identified local landmark: Michal Olšiak began building it in Poděšín on 26 April. A tourist information point with seating next to the inn and the Strom sculpture was completed on 18 June 2010. If you plan to visit the information point, check in advance whether it is currently accessible.
Excursion route and pond
A published excursion route from the Nížkov ossuary chapel to the customs post passes through Poděšín. It can be saved to a mobile device and used offline in Mapy.cz. If you would like to include this tour in your plans, check in advance whether the app is available. The route provides a specific connection to the village, while Karbarova cesta is described here as a former route.
The Rybník na Bejčině pond is another local feature connected with water. These two details give you different ways to explore Poděšín through its landscape and local history.
