Podmoky lies on the border between the Vysočina Region and the Central Bohemian Region, in a gently rolling landscape near Golčův Jeníkov. The Brslenka flows through the village. It is formed by the upper course of the Čáslavka and the Hluboký potok, and flows into the Doubrava. You can explore the area through both its waterways and its history.

Landscape and Water

The cadastral area of Podmoky includes three larger ponds: Starý, Nový and Rousínov. Two are considered suitable for swimming; check this locally, as conditions may vary by season. The ponds are a distinctive part of the landscape, while the Brslenka flows through the village and joins a larger river system.

Rousínov Pond is privately owned and is located by a mill. There are cabins on its dam where summer camps are held; their organization may vary. If you are interested in fishing, note the differing dates given for Nový Pond: sport fishing there began on April 1, 2025. A notice consulted on August 24, 2026, states that fishing in the 451 099 Nový Pond area is prohibited until further notice due to fish mortality. Check the status before visiting.

History at Specific Sites

Well-preserved remains of the small Hrádek u Podmok castle lie on a spur of land above a stream. The castle dates to the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. The first written mention of Podmoky dates from 1360; at the time, historical sources named it as part of the Golčův Jeníkov estate.

Buildings also mark distinct periods: the Church of the Virgin Mary in Podmoky was built in 1908 and renovated in 1981. A brick bell tower stands at its original site and dates from 1835.

Coin finds add to the medieval history. Coins from the time of Václav II were discovered in 1912 during excavation work for the foundation of a barn at house number 82. Brakteáty, called “braktáče” in Czech, have also been found in Podmoky. The coins from the time of Přemysl Otakar II were minted between 1193 and 1278.

On Foot and Looking Out for Wildlife

A marked hiking trail passes through Podmoky. It runs from Golčův Jeníkov–město railway station towards Tisí skála and continues to Horky railway station. If you plan to include this route in your itinerary, check the signage and trail conditions locally before setting out.

For a different kind of encounter, visit the U Hajdúchů family farm, where visitors can meet and pet Huacaya alpacas up close. Animals in the visitor enclosures also include goats, Kunekune pigs, Belgian Giant rabbits, and waterfowl and poultry. The farm also produces and sells honey from its own beehives. Podmoky thus offers a range of highlights: a marked hiking trail, local architecture and history, encounters with animals, and a regional product.

Getting to Podmoky

From the I/38 main road, you can reach Podmoky by turning right at the start of the Golčův Jeníkov bypass when coming from the direction of Čáslav. It is about 2.5 kilometres along a local road to the village. As road conditions may change, check the route before setting out.
