Discover Pohled: Culture and History
Accommodation in Pohled
If you are looking for a hotel in Pohled, architectural history, pilgrimage, rural everyday life, or a hiking and mountain biking route can be the focus of your stay. The places and themes differ considerably: from the early Gothic Church of St. Andrew to the Svatá Anna pilgrimage site and the Selské muzeum Michalův statek.
Churches and Architectural History
The Church of St. Andrew in Pohled is an early Gothic building. It was destroyed during the Hussite Wars in 1422 and later altered. Its architectural details also offer a tangible impression of the architecture: the nave is 23 metres high and is spanned by a brick net vault with ribs made of red sandstone.
The history of the convent church in Pohled, originally dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, reaches back even further: its foundation stone was laid in 1265. The Proboštství–Fara building offers a different point of reference in time. It was built in 1714 to a design by master builder Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel. Thus, buildings from different centuries are at the heart of the town’s history.
Count Evžen Silva-Tarouca Unwerth had the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, with the Silva-Tarouca Unwerth family crypt, built in 1840. The five coffins in the crypt can still be seen through windows into the crypt. If you wish to visit the crypt, check access in advance.
Svatá Anna and Rural Life
The Svatá Anna pilgrimage site near Pohled has origins dating back to the 18th century. A Rococo church was built there in 1760 and consecrated in 1761. A spring was also discovered during construction of the chapel at the pilgrimage site. The dates distinguish between construction and consecration; together with the recorded discovery of the spring, they shape the history of this place.
The Selské muzeum Michalův statek in Pohled offers a different view of the past. It illustrates the life, work and customs of a middle-ranking farmer in the period from after the Thirty Years’ War until the abolition of forced labour in 1848. Rather than sacred architectural history, the focus here is on rural everyday life over a long historical period.
After its reconstruction, the entire Michalův statek complex was declared a cultural monument; ten years later, it was declared a national cultural monument.
