Sedletín: Nature, Birdwatching and Local History
Accommodation in Sedletín
Sedletín brings together several distinct travel interests: wetlands, birdwatching, local history and local dance events. If you are looking for a hotel in Sedletín, you can start by considering which of these interests you want to shape your stay. Nature observation is partly seasonal; local history and the menhir offer other points of interest. Matching your travel dates to your interests is particularly helpful if birds or an event are your main focus.
Wetlands and ponds
The Havranka Nature Reserve extends across the cadastral areas of Jiříkov u Kamene and Sedletín. It protects a complex of wet meadows, tall-sedge vegetation, and wet marsh-marigold or thistle meadows. So, alongside birdwatching, Sedletín’s protected wetland habitats are also a focus of its natural attractions. Within the municipality, the Jilemský potok stream connects four ponds. The Sedletínská jezírka are the site leased by OK Vysočina for the longest period; water irises bloom there. Meadow vegetation and bodies of water offer different ways to experience Sedletín’s natural attractions. Blooming conditions can change over time.
Birdwatching and the seasons
The Ornithological Observation Trail is 3 km long and can be walked along its entire length. Over the course of the year, visitors can observe six other duck species on the trail, in addition to the most common species, the mallard. Their occurrence can vary seasonally. Great crested grebes are regularly found near the trail and breed there; their presence is also seasonal. This distinction helps with orientation: duck sightings refer to the trail, while great crested grebes are found nearby. Every year around the turn of April and May, OK Vysočina holds “Vítání ptačího zpěvu” (Welcome to the Birdsong) in connection with the observation trail. This annual event and the seasonally varying presence of species are distinct points of reference in the calendar.
Cycling route and access
A section of cycling route 4153 opened in 2002 in the northern part of the Sedletín cadastral area. Sedletín is accessible via road II/346.
Local history and the menhir
Sedletín probably originated at the end of the 14th century at a junction branching from the Liběcká Road to the Habrská Road. Near Sedletín, beside the road from Habry to Chotěboř, stands the four-metre-high Menhir u Sedletína, also known as Vysoký Kámen, set into the ground. The Vysočina Nature Conservation Association erected it in 2002. Thus, the probable founding of the village at the end of the 14th century and the erection of the menhir in 2002 provide two distinct points of reference in time.
Local dance events
“Sedletínské kulturní léto” (Sedletín Cultural Summer) is a series of dance events held at the summer dance venue in the centre of Sedletín. This offers a specific cultural attraction alongside nature and local history. If you would like to plan your stay around a dance event, check the dates in advance.
