Vez-Skala
Accommodation in Vez-Skala
Skála lies in a valley below a rocky outcrop on the Perlový potok stream. The place is notable for the Baroque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, its pilgrimage tradition, and the surrounding landscape.
Valley, rocky outcrop, and storks
The valley setting below the rocky outcrop gives Skála a distinctive landscape feature. Another notable natural observation adds to this: storks have regularly nested on a 30-meter-high chimney at the distillery since 1954. This detail complements the cultural and historical themes with a distinct glimpse of local wildlife.
The Baroque pilgrimage church
The present-day Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in 1728 in place of an earlier wooden chapel. Its architecture can be seen in the different shapes of its exterior and interior: the nave is rectangular on the outside but oval inside. Niches along the transverse and diagonal axes echo this layout. A tower with chamfered corners stands on the west façade; the year 1728 is inscribed above the façade.
The furnishings also bring together different Baroque and later elements. The Baroque high altar dates from around 1740. Its twisted columns and four statues of angels venerating the Virgin Mary define the altar structure. The furnishings also include a Rococo pulpit and a Stations of the Cross by J. Vysekal, dated 1883. The church has been a protected monument since 1958.
Local history around the church
The building history is also reflected in other places and dates: the rectory in Skála dates from 1787. Below the church, a monument on the slope commemorates soldiers who fell in the First World War; it was unveiled on June 9, 1930. A stone staircase was built in front of the church in 1864.
The former cemetery lies behind the church. A mortuary stands at its far end, on the church’s axis. Together with the monument on the slope, it forms a distinct historical setting around the church, while the building’s forms and furnishings draw attention primarily to its architecture.
Plan your pilgrimage and church service visit
A pilgrimage takes place at the church every year on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. A Sunday Mass is listed there at 10:30 a.m. The service schedule was updated on March 20, 2026; check the parish’s current contact details before travelling.
The pilgrimage on August 15 is an annual event, while the Mass is a weekly service. If you want to plan your stay around either occasion, this distinction will help with your scheduling. When choosing a hotel in Vez-Skala, you can then consider whether the pilgrimage date, the church’s architecture, or its valley setting will shape your stay most.
