Vilémov between architectural history and cycling route

For a stay in Vilémov, you can choose from several points of interest: the castle’s architectural history, churches and memorial sites, and cycling route 5127. Architecture and local history offer a different focus from cycling. The castle’s closure period is essential for planning. Due to roof work, Vilémov Castle is temporarily closed from 2026 to 2028. No reservations will be accepted and no events or weddings will be held during this period. Therefore, do not plan a castle visit or an event at the castle during this time. If travelling after 2028, check its status again.

Castle and churches: historical layers

The marquis and his family expanded the castle over 22 years, transforming it from a Renaissance castle into a Baroque one. The change in style was therefore part of a longer architectural development.

The Church of St Wenceslas was built in 1726–1727. It is a spacious, single-nave Baroque building with a three-sided, closed presbytery. It also has a medieval prism-shaped tower; its base is of Romanesque origin. In this description, the features belong to different parts of the building: the single nave and Baroque style refer to the church building, the medieval classification to the tower, and the Romanesque origin to its base.

The Protestant church in Vilémov tells a different architectural story: it was converted from a former Turkish shawl factory and consecrated in 1882. The change from factory use to church differs from the castle’s stylistic transformation. The focus at the monastery in Vilémov, meanwhile, is on its destruction: the Hussites destroyed it in 1421, and only the foundations remained.

Menhir and military memorial

In Jakubovice, a district of Vilémov, the so-called “Pupík Evropy” is represented by a stone menhir. This adds a named stone motif to the stories of churches and monasteries. A wooden cross in the military cemetery in Klášter commemorates Austrian soldiers who died in a field hospital during the fighting and were buried there.

Cycling route and travel

Cycling route 5127 passes through Vilémov. It is considered a moderately difficult, hilly road route for road bikes and trekking bikes. If you would like to include cycling, you can assess the route in terms of the terrain and type of bike, rather than considering only its path through the town.
