Evritania is the mountainous region of the southern Pindus. Velouchi Ski Center, hiking trails, rivers and Lake Kremasta shape travel ideas, alongside museums and historic buildings. This makes it possible to plan a stay in very different ways: with winter sports, outings by the water, or time for culture and history. If you are looking for a hotel, it helps to first weigh up the experiences that matter most for your trip.

Skiing and Trails in the Mountain Region

Velouchi Ski Center has five lifts and 18 runs. These include two snowboard runs and four off-piste routes. Seasonal facilities may change, so check the latest operating information before your trip. Karpenisi is a useful reference point for distances: the ski center is 12 kilometers from the town.

Hiking and climbing are also among the things to do in Evritania. Sections of the E4 European long-distance path run through the area: these include routes to high peaks and shorter trails through gorges and forests, as well as over stone bridges. The via ferrata at Mavri Spilia begins after a 20-minute hike along the marked M7 trail. There are therefore different ways to explore the area, from longer routes towards the peaks to a clearly described approach to the via ferrata.

Gorges, Rivers and Lake Kremasta

The Panta Vrechi Gorge between Roska and Doliana is considered a landmark of Evritania and a unique attraction that draws visitors from Greece and abroad. River trekking is possible in the gorge. You can drive as far as one point; the rest of the way is accessed by river trekking. Local access and safety conditions may vary. Canyoning is possible in the Halikorema area, while rafting can be enjoyed on the Tavropos River.

The Kremasta Dam and the artificial lake of the same name lie where the rivers of Evritania meet. Visitors can take a water tour there by canoe, boat or another small watercraft; availability should be confirmed locally. You can also try wild or farmed trout from Lake Kremasta. Whether it is available depends on the season and the provider.

Museums and History

The Cultural and Historical Center of Evrytania combines historical themes with technological presentations: it uses 3D projections, offers a VR experience about the historic Battle of Kefalovryso, and features a 360-degree video tour of the Episkopi Chapel. The center also displays a replica of the mosaic from the early Christian Basilica of Agios Leonidis in Klavsi. The installations may be updated over time. If you are visiting for a specific feature, check in advance what is currently on display.

In Koryschades, the Museum of the Greek Resistance is housed in the village school building, where the first National Assembly was held in May 1944. Older buildings also offer insights into the region’s history: the early Christian Church of Saint Leonidis in Klafsi dates from the 5th century. The stone bridge of Agrafa is estimated to have been built in the 17th century. The Christian monasteries of Evrytania that have survived to this day are considered significant artistic monuments and important pilgrimage sites of national significance.

Nature and Planning Your Stay

Nature routes in Evritania include wetlands along the Agrafiotis, Tavropos and Karpenisiotis rivers, as well as at Lake Kremasta. The landscape thus brings together river areas, the lake and mountain trails in different ways; cultural sites and museums also provide further reasons to plan excursions around more than one activity.

When choosing a hotel, you can sort out your priorities: are skiing and mountain trails, water activities, or culture and history most important? This can help clarify what you want your stay in Evritania to focus on, without having to limit yourself to just one side of the region.
