Phthiotis brings together mountainous regions, a coastal area and lowland areas. The Spercheios provides a distinctive geographic landmark: the river is 80 kilometres long, rises in the gorges of Tymfristos and flows into the Maliakos Gulf. Its source, length and mouth give a clear picture of its course. When planning, you can first consider whether nature, archaeological sites, museums or thermal springs should be your main focus.

Landscape and orientation

Natural highlights include the Asopos Gorge in Oeta National Park, one of the most popular nature walks in the prefecture of Phthiotis. Another geological feature is the Arkitsa Mirror: its vertical cliff face is 300 metres long and 80 metres high. The Spercheios Delta is also a distinct natural landmark; it is a protected area within the Natura 2000 network. These examples offer different highlights: a walking route, a rock formation and a protected delta.

The P.A.TH.E. motorway is an important reference point for road navigation. It runs along the entire eastern length of Phthiotis and connects with the Ionian and Egnatia motorways.

Archaeology and collections

The collections cover different periods and archaeological sites. The Byzantine Museum of Phthiotis in Ypati is housed in the restored building of the 1836 Kapodistrias Barracks. Using archaeological finds, it presents life in the region from the Early Christian period through the Byzantine period.

The Archaeological Collection of Atalanti is housed in the listed former high school. It displays finds from excavations in East Locris and the northeastern part of ancient Phocis. The collection spans from the Neolithic period to Roman times. In Elateia, the Archaeological Collection presents its finds in two rooms arranged chronologically and geographically. On display are objects from the Upper Palaeolithic to Roman times, including architectural fragments, vessels, tools and jewellery. The collection also includes finds from the region known in antiquity as northeastern Phocis.

In Lamia, the Archaeological Museum displays finds from Phthiotis and Evrytania dating from prehistoric times to Late Antiquity. It is housed in the renovated barracks from the reign of King Otto, within Lamia Castle. Here, the history of the collection is linked to a specific historic location.

Ancient sites, thermal springs and regional products

Thermopylae in Phthiotis is of great archaeological significance because of the battle of 480 BC. At the ancient citadel of Proerna in Neo Monastiri, Domokos, the specific features concern its architecture: the fortification consists of walls 2.5 metres wide, built from massive limestone blocks dating to the Hellenistic period. These present two distinct historical points of reference: a dated event at Thermopylae and the dimensions, material and dating of the walls at Proerna.

The thermal springs also differ in their described properties. Near Kamena Vourla, the water has varying chemical properties and temperatures between 30 and 42°C. The Ampla Paleovrahas thermal springs offer therapeutic baths in thermal pools with water at 26°C. Katiki Domokou offers a culinary connection: this local cheese from Phthiotis is white, low-fat and soft.

You can focus on landscapes and walking, collections and ancient sites, or thermal springs. First decide which themes matter for your trip; this will help you match your hotel search to your priorities.
