Western Macedonia: Culture, Lakes and Culinary Delights
Accommodation in Western Macedonia
Western Macedonia can be explored through a wide range of themes: historical collections and buildings, lakes and hiking trails, geological features, and regional products. Whether your interests lie especially in culture, nature or cuisine, the different places offer various ways to experience the region.
Historic Sites and Collections
In Lechovo, the “Georgios Gorantis” Folklore and Ethnological Museum displays historical documents, tools, textiles, stone artefacts, traditional costumes and household objects. The collection brings together different aspects of everyday life and heritage. If you plan to visit the museum, check the current access arrangements in advance.
Nymfaio offers several points of interest for those interested in cultural history. Since 2000, the House of Nymfaio has been home to the Museum of Silversmithing, Folklore and History. Its extensive collection includes tools and examples of traditional silversmithing. The Church of Agios Nikolaos in Nymfaio is considered an important post-Byzantine monument. The historic Nikeios School is also home to the ARCTUROS Bear Information Centre.
In Aiani, the Royal Necropolis comprises twelve monumental chamber tombs. Near Servia, meanwhile, the Byzantine castle town can be explored as an open-air museum along a paved path beside the Byzantine walls. At Lake Mikri Prespa, a floating bridge leads to the island of Agios Achilleios and the ruins of a three-aisled basilica dating from the 10th century. These places offer different perspectives, from archaeological tombs and a fortified town to a religious building.
Lakes, Geology and Trails
The Prespa Lakes are among Europe’s most ecologically valuable wetlands. Prespa National Park is part of the first transboundary protected area in the Balkans. In Prespa, hiking trails wind through forests and along the lakes. Organised boat trips depart from Psarades and cross Lake Megali Prespa to hermitages and Byzantine rock paintings. These tours bring the lake and its historical traces together.
Another trail through varied landscapes runs through the Platanorevma area near Servia, following the Tranos Lakkos mountain trail past gorges, streams and natural waterfalls. Trail conditions may change after weather events; check the route’s condition before setting out. On the calm waters of Lake Zazari, you can go canoeing while taking in views of cormorants, pelicans, mountains and forests.
The region also offers a geological perspective: the Grevena–Kozani Geopark has been part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network since 2021. It contains Greece’s oldest dated rocks, estimated to be around one billion years old. The geopark offers educational activities, guided field visits and experiential programmes throughout the year. Lake Kastoria, also known as Lake Orestiada, offers a different perspective: it is Greece’s seventh-largest natural lake.
The region also offers activities focused on wildlife and nature. At the ARCTUROS Bear Sanctuary, rescued bears can be observed in a fenced habitat covering 50 acres. The ARCTUROS Wolf and Lynx Sanctuary near Agrapidies is located in a 70-acre oak forest. The Kastoria Aquarium is the largest freshwater aquarium in the Balkans. For cyclists, Vasilitsa Mountain Bike Park has two designated trails.
Wine and Regional Specialties
In Amyntaio, wineries welcome visitors for tastings and tours focusing on Xinomavro vineyards and the PDO wine tradition. Wine tastings are accompanied by regional specialties such as Florina peppers, cheese and pies. This brings wine together with other local products. Prespa beans are a locally produced product with a protected geographical indication.
Servia and Lefkara also offer a variety of tasting experiences: a farm near Servia offers olive picking and guided tastings during the harvest season. The timing of the harvest varies from year to year. A local dairy in Lefkara offers tastings of feta, graviera, goat’s cheese and yogurt; participation requirements may vary.
If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, start by considering the experiences you want your trip to focus on, such as museums and monuments, trails and lakes, or tastings and regional cuisine. This can help you choose a destination that suits your interests.
