In Svalbarðseyri, coastal and village trails, the swimming pool and Svalbarðskirkja provide practical reference points for planning your trip. Each feature of the area offers a different focus; for the trails in particular, it is worth considering the route, length and difficulty rating separately.

Coastal and village loop

The Svalbarðseyri Village and Shore Walk is an easy hike along the coast and through the village. The trail passes a small wooded area and follows the Valsá River. From the hillside, there are views of Svalbarðskirkja. The loop therefore brings together the coastal and village route, the river landscape and a view of the church. This view is a scenic feature of the hike; the church’s history and furnishings are a separate focus of cultural history. If you would like to take in several views of the area while hiking, this trail brings these elements together in one route.

Comparing other trails

Two other trails can be distinguished mainly by their length. The Svalbarðseyri–Fjara trail runs along the shore and is just under 3 km long. The Hrossadalur–Þórisstaðaskarð–Svalbarðseyri route is just over 11 km long and descends to Svalbarðseyri. Some trail markers on this route may be missing or have fallen over. The easy rating applies to the Village and Shore Walk; for the other two routes, length and route are the specific points of comparison. The information addresses different planning questions: it helps you compare trail lengths, take the described descent into account and bear in mind the note about the markers. The Svalbarðseyri–Fjara trail is considerably shorter than the Hrossadalur–Þórisstaðaskarð–Svalbarðseyri route.

Swimming pool in Svalbarðseyri

The swimming pool offers a different focus from the trails. The pool at Svalbarðseyri measures 6 m × 12.5 m; the pool area also includes a hot tub. The measurements refer to the pool, while the hot tub is an additional feature of the area. This makes it possible to consider the stated pool size separately from the additional amenity.

Svalbarðskirkja: History and furnishings

Svalbarðskirkja also offers a concrete connection to the area’s history. Construction began in 1952, and the church was consecrated on May 30, 1957. The church contains a pipe organ and a chalice bearing the year 1847. Five calendar years separate the start of construction and the consecration; the year on the chalice is 105 years before construction began. It is therefore a separate point of reference for the chalice and does not date the church building. The building’s history and its furnishings can thus be clearly distinguished: the dates 1952 and 1957 refer to the church building, while the organ and chalice are specific details of its furnishings.
