If you are looking for a hotel in Hveragerdi, you can plan your stay around the themes the town has concrete points of connection with: geothermal energy, local history, art and activities in a geothermal landscape. Hveragarðurinn is located in the heart of Hveragerdi. A walking trail leads through the town, while Reykjadalur, with its hot river, lies within the town limits. Fishing on the Varmá and the golf course above the town also appeal to different interests.

Geothermal Energy and Local Flavours

Hveragarðurinn, the Geothermal Park, is located in the heart of Hveragerdi and is dedicated to geothermal energy. The visitor centre in the park provides information about geothermal energy, microbiology, geology and volcanic activity. In the park, visitors can cook eggs in the hot spring and sample rye bread baked using geothermal heat. The geothermal theme is therefore explored both through the visitor centre’s information and through specific culinary experiences: the eggs are cooked in the hot spring, and the rye bread is baked using geothermal heat.

Walking Trail, River and Activities

Söguleiðin is a walking trail through Hveragerdi; information panels cover the town’s history and culture. The trail thus focuses on the town itself. Reykjadalur offers a different focus: the area, with its hot river, lies within the town limits and offers opportunities for hiking, running and cycling in a geothermal landscape. The two attractions differ mainly in their focus: local history and culture on the walking trail, and outdoor activity in the landscape of Reykjadalur. The Varmá adds another dimension as a river where salmon anglers fish year after year and which is popular with them. Nearby, Hveragerdi’s golf course is located at Gufudal, above the town and in scenic surroundings.

Art and Horticulture

The LÁ Art Museum houses a collection of contemporary and traditional Icelandic art. Its changing exhibitions feature works by local and regional artists. Another outdoor art attraction is the “Listamannabærinn Hveragerði” exhibition in Lystigarðurinn á Fossflöt Park. Its nine glass panels introduce nine artists, along with their works and biographies. The collection, changing exhibitions and outdoor exhibition offer different perspectives, ranging from Icelandic art and regional artists to artist portraits in the park.

Flowers and greenhouses are also among Hveragerdi’s visitor attractions and are connected with Icelandic horticultural practices. Visitors can buy flowers and plants there. This adds a distinct horticultural perspective to the geothermal and artistic themes.

Visitor Information

Hveragerdi’s tourist information centre offers brochures, maps, a booking service and internet access. It also has an earthquake simulator that lets visitors experience a strong earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale. Details of visitor services may change; check which offers are available for your visit before you go. This allows you to take the information services and simulator into account when planning, without confusing them with the town’s walking, art or nature attractions.
