Discover Búðardalur
Accommodation in Búðardalur
Búðardalur is the service center of the Dalir region. When looking for a hotel, your plans for the day can be a useful starting point: would you like to include the sports center and cultural attractions in town, the Búðardalur–Laxarós hike, or experiences related to the Viking Age in the surrounding area? The attractions vary in theme and connection to the town, providing specific reference points for planning your trip.
Sports and swimming at the sports center
Búðardalur Sports Center has a 25-meter outdoor swimming pool, hot tubs, a children’s pool, a sauna and a cold plunge pool. The facility also includes a nearly 700 m² multi-purpose hall with a parquet floor and a fitness room. It opened in February 2026. This brings together several different areas: the pools and sauna focus on swimming and saunas, while the multi-purpose hall and fitness room add indoor activities. If you plan to visit the center, check the current opening hours; schedules may change.
Town festival and cultural attractions
The “Heim í Búðardal” town festival takes place in early July in even-numbered years. Its program is family-friendly and locally themed, with a variety of events. The 2026 edition was scheduled for July 3–5; those dates have already passed. Early July is a useful guide for planning, but you should check the specific festival dates when arranging a trip.
Leifsbúð, a restored former cooperative building, is located at the harbor in Búðardalur. Today it houses various exhibitions, a café and a tourist information center. Leifsbúð thus brings together cultural attractions and visitor information. The Leif Eiriksson Center in Búðardalur has a distinct historical focus: its exhibition presents stories about the voyages of Erik the Red and Leif the Lucky to Greenland, Canada and the United States. It features works by ten renowned Icelandic visual artists. The travel stories and artworks offer two distinct ways to engage with the exhibition.
Hiking and experiences in the surrounding area
Vínlandssetrið is a suitable starting or finishing point for the Búðardalur–Laxarós hike. These two possible roles for the center are a specific point of reference when planning this hike.
Eiríksstaðir is 17 km from Búðardalur. Storytellers explain the history of the farm, its inhabitants and the Viking Age. The living interpretation includes Viking blacksmithing tools, traditional crafts, architecture and Viking clothing. Opening is seasonal and may change, so check current visiting dates in advance.
Outside Búðardalur, Dalahestar offers tailor-made riding tours for individuals and small groups. The options therefore vary by activity: the hike is named after the two places Búðardalur and Laxarós, Eiríksstaðir focuses on the Viking Age, and Dalahestar on horseback riding. When choosing activities for a day, you can combine these highlights with the attractions in town.
