Discover Thingeyri: Workshop, Craftsmanship and Nature Trail
Accommodation in Thingeyri
Thingeyri combines a long trading history with a striking fjord and mountain landscape. The town lies in a mountain range in the Westfjords, often called the “Westfjords Alps.” At 998 m, Kaldbakur is the highest mountain in the Westfjords. Thingeyri’s history is also closely connected to trade: the town is home to a 1734 warehouse, considered one of Iceland’s oldest buildings. The landscape, craftsmanship and traces of history give the destination several distinct sides.
Workshop, Trading History and Craftsmanship
The Old Blacksmith’s Workshop in Thingeyri is Iceland’s oldest still-operating machine workshop. It has been preserved almost in its original condition and is now run as a living museum. During the war, the workshop made spare parts for foreign and Icelandic ships of all sizes and types. This work connects its technological history with the town’s maritime working history.
The outdoor mural Tankur also reflects Thingeyri’s working history, linking an oil tank with the town’s work. The old Salthúsið is home to Koltra, a gallery and craft house. Crafts from the Westfjords and Dýrafjörður are offered for sale there; the selection may change. Koltra is also home to Vattasaumur, one of Iceland’s oldest woolworking techniques. Koltra also has a tourist information office with information about recreational activities in the nearby area. As service arrangements may change, it is advisable to check in advance if needed.
Walking by the Fjord
The nature trail along the shore starts at Tankur and follows the fjord. Information boards cover the fjord’s natural environment and wildlife; there are also entertaining puzzles for the whole family. The trail is impassable at high tide, so check the tide before setting out.
The trail ends at a rest area where Thingeyri’s seals can be found. Please do not disturb the animals. You can also walk along the shore on part of the Sandafell loop: this section lies between Thingeyri and the drying racks used by stockfish producers. This makes it distinct from the nature trail, which starts at Tankur and leads to the seals’ rest area.
Cycling Loops and Route Planning
On the cycling loop around Sandafell, Thingeyri’s local mountain, the entire route follows a road or track and has only gentle climbs. It is suitable for the whole family. Another bike tour starts in Thingeyri and first follows the old road over Hrafnseyrarheiði towards Hrafnseyri. As route conditions may vary, it is best to check them before setting off.
The annual running and cycling festival in the Westfjords includes a 55 km route near Thingeyri. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the event dates in advance. The two bike tours and the festival route offer different ways to experience the surrounding area by bike; route conditions and dates are practical details to consider when planning.
More Things to Do in Town
Thingeyri has a swimming pool. The outdoor area also includes a campsite, a beach volleyball court and a Viking area with barbecue spots, benches, tables and a large stage. Together with the town’s craft and history attractions, these facilities offer options for a variety of day plans.
