In Ljørdalen, nature, architectural history and sporting activities come together in different ways. Storbekkåsen is the main Norwegian access point to Fulufjellet National Park; a marked circular hike begins at the shelter there, and the Fulufjelltrappa leads in the direction of Brynflået. Ljørdalen Church is an example of historic architecture. Fulufjellet Alpine Centre, the Gira toboggan run and the seasonal Bike Park add skiing, tobogganing and mountain biking to the area’s offerings.

Access, a circular hike and park landscape

The main Norwegian entrance to Fulufjellet National Park at Storbekkåsen has a rest area with a shelter, fire pit and information boards. A place to rest and information for finding your way are thus brought together right at the entrance.

A marked circular hike of about five kilometres leads from the shelter through the area; parts of the trail are paved with stones. The Sherpa staircase, Fulufjelltrappa, follows a different route: it leads from Storbekkåsen in the direction of Brynflået and was completed in 2019. The circular hike and the staircase differ in their route types: a loop here, a route towards Brynflået there. Trail conditions may vary by season; check local conditions before your hike.

Fulufjellet National Park encompasses large, contiguous and relatively untouched forest and mountain areas that cross the national border. The park description refers to the wider natural area, while Storbekkåsen is its main Norwegian access point. The Ljøra also gives Ljørdalen its geographical setting: the river flows through the valley, comes from Sweden and also flows into the Västerdalälven in Sweden. The area also includes the larger Fregn, Smoldalen, Granbekken og Drevja, Granåsen and Storberget nature reserves.

Culture at Ljørdalen Church

Ljørdalen Church is a relatively simple wooden long church, clad on the outside, built in 1872. The interior has been relatively well preserved from the time of construction. Its features include an oak-grained pulpit, a rood screen or chancel arch, and a baptismal font. The term “long church” describes the building’s form; the timber and exterior cladding describe its construction and appearance. The church therefore highlights both its building method and its preserved interior details.

Skiing, tobogganing and mountain biking

Fulufjellet Alpine Centre in Ljørdalen has nine ski runs. The Gira toboggan run at Fulufjellet is 1,600 metres long; speeds of up to 70 km/h are possible on the descent. Operating conditions may change, so check the operator’s latest information before visiting.

Fulufjellet Bike Park offers playful, flowy trails for beginner and experienced mountain bikers. Trail availability is seasonal.

When planning, it is helpful to distinguish between permanent features of the area and seasonal sports offerings: the church, river course and park landscape sit alongside trails that are available seasonally and sports facilities whose operating conditions can change. Check the latest information for each before your visit.
