Grong brings together culture in the town centre, marked cycling routes and historical landmarks. The railway station is also an important point of reference for getting here. Depending on your interests, you can include culture, cycling or seasonal activities in your plans for your stay.

Culture and architectural history in Grong

Kulturhuset Kuben in the centre of Grong houses a concert hall, cinema, library, swimming pool and rehearsal rooms for music and performing arts. The library desk also serves as the cultural centre’s reception and sells, among other things, tickets. The centre is staffed on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 09:00 to 16:00 and on Wednesdays from 13:00 to 20:00. Check these hours before your visit if your plans depend on them.

Grong Church stands on a medieval church site. The timber-framed long church was completed in 1876 and consecrated on 14 November 1877. Inside the church is a 16th-century altarpiece beneath a 12th-century Calvary group; both were restored by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage (Riksantikvaren) in 1976. A wooden processional crucifix probably dates from shortly after 1150.

Cycling and routes

A marked 9 km cycling route starts in the centre and follows FV 391 towards Lierne. Bicycle signs mark the route. The 16 km Homorunden cycling loop can also be started in the centre. It is therefore seven kilometres longer than the marked route along FV 391. Check the markings and surface conditions on the Homorunden locally. The Skottleiken Rundt loop can also start in the centre.

A detour from the marked cycling route along FV 391 leads to the Tømmeråshøla bathing spot at Tømmeråsfossen on the Sanddøla. In parts of the river, you can swim and use a natural waterslide formed in the rock; river conditions vary. Tømmeråsfossen is about 2.5 km from the centre of Grong and has a drop of about 23 m.

Another route passes through the centre, follows the Sanddøla from there to Tømmeråsfossen, crosses the suspension bridge to Homo and continues along the old road towards Bjørgan.

Getting here and activities in the wider Grong destination

Grong railway station is a junction on the Nordland Line and offers bus connections to Rørvik, Brønnøysund and Namsos. Check the timetables before travelling if you need to plan your connections.

The wider Grong destination also offers seasonal activities. Grong Skisenter at Bjørgan is the largest ski centre in Namdal and one of the largest alpine ski areas in Trøndelag. At 872 m, Geitfjellet is Grong’s main arena for skiing, snowboarding and telemark skiing. In summer, Grong Skisenter offers an 18-hole disc golf course and mountain hikes; check the availability of these activities separately. Bjørgan skianlegg is also a regional cross-country skiing and biathlon facility.

The wider Grong destination also includes Grong bygdemuseum in Bergsmo. The museum’s traditional buildings include Bergsmolåna, Ferjemannstu, a storehouse, a bakehouse, a smithy and a boat workshop. Bergsmolåna shows how the main building of a farm in Grong was furnished and equipped in the past.
