If you are looking for a hotel in Leka for your stay, its landscape, geology and cultural history offer practical starting points for planning your trip. Leka combines coastal heaths and beaches with an exceptional geological profile, diverse birdlife and archaeological sites. The activities are also clearly defined: hiking, cycling and paddling offer different perspectives on the landscape. You can shape your plans around the subjects that interest you most.

Geology, Coast and Birdlife

Leka is designated Norway’s geological national monument. A complete section of the oceanic crust is exposed here, reaching all the way down to the Earth’s mantle. Støypet is a marked trail across colourful rocks from the deepest part of the oceanic crust. The landscape includes coastal heaths, species-rich coastal meadows, white sandy beaches, smooth rock formations and pebble beaches. It is also home to highly diverse birdlife, with numerous seabird species. White-tailed eagles can be seen in flight almost daily, although sightings depend on the weather and the season.

Cultural History and Archaeological Sites

Leka Bygdemuseum comprises the museum farm at Skei, the old school at Leknes and the stone hut on the Skeisnesset cultural trail. At the museum farm, you can see buildings, equipment and tools from Leka’s 19th- and 20th-century farming and fishing culture. Skeisnesset features traces of Stone Age settlements and impressive burial mounds. Herlaugshaugen near Huseby is one of Norway’s largest burial mounds. Investigations in 2023 showed that it is a ship burial dating from the 8th century.

Solsemhula also adds to the picture of the archaeological sites. During investigations and excavations in 1912 and 1913, animal and human bones, some tools and 21 painted figures on the walls were documented there. The different remains range from traces of settlements and burial mounds to finds from a cave. If you are interested in Leka’s cultural history, each of these places offers its own way to explore it.

Hiking, Cycling and Paddling

Herlaugsløypa is a marked circular hiking trail in the Lekafjellene mountains. The hiking trail from Solsem passes through coastal heath and over old seabed made up of gravel; along the way, you can see Lekamøya in its familiar silhouette. The trail does not lead to the rock formation, but offers views of it along the way. A planning map and a trail overview listing parking areas and route starting points are available to help plan your hike. Check the route details before setting off.

There are 18 marked paddling routes on Leka, with varying levels of difficulty, across four areas. The Leknesøyan–Skeisnesset paddling area includes protected areas, wetlands and a nationally valuable cultural landscape. When choosing a route, take note of the differences in difficulty and check access and markings before setting out.

The circular cycling route is 28 km long and starts in Husby, 2 km from Skeishavna harbour. These details can help you factor the route into your plans; local access conditions may change. The activities therefore differ not only in type, but also in the information you need to prepare.
