Leka: Geology, Coastal Heathland and Culture
Accommodation in Leka
Leka is Norway’s largest and most complete ophiolite complex. Its landscape offers a special insight into the area’s geological features. Cultural traces and marked routes also shape what you can consider when planning a stay on Leka.
Ophiolite, Coastal Heathland and Geopark
The surface of Leka reveals a unique cross-section of rocks formed at different depths in the Earth’s crust. On the way to Solsem Cave, you’ll find a distinctive serpentinite conglomerate: it consists of loosely cemented stone and scree from Leka’s yellow-red serpentinite mountains. Those interested in geology can see different aspects of the area’s geological structure at specific locations.
Leka is part of Trollfjell Geopark. Together with the municipalities of Vega, Vevelstad, Brønnøy, Sømna and Bindal, the geopark forms an area with a geologically significant natural heritage of international importance and promotes geotourism. Skeisnesset also combines natural and cultural features: the open landscape is characterized by coastal heathland, monumental burial mounds and expansive views.
Cultural Traces at Skei and in Solsem Cave
The open-air museum at Skei displays buildings, equipment and tools from Leka’s 19th- and 20th-century farming and fishing culture. Leka Church is a wooden long church built in 1867. These places represent different aspects of cultural history: the museum offers a glimpse into everyday farming and fishing life, while the church is a historic wooden building.
Solsem Cave is one of nine known caves with cave paintings in Northern Europe. The first Nordic cave paintings were discovered there on 3 May 1912. The cave can only be visited under the supervision of a guide. Check in advance whether a guided tour is currently available if you’re planning a visit.
Routes on the Water and on Land
For experienced paddlers, the 40-kilometre, two-day Leka rundt kayak circuit is an option in good weather conditions. The circuit includes a swimming stop at Ă…rdalsanden. There are also 18 marked kayak routes around Leka; their signage follows the new standard for paddling routes. As the route network may change, check local maps and conditions before setting out.
On land, there are 50 marked mountain and hiking routes, signposted according to the national standard. The Herlaugsveien is a marked circular trail in the Leka Mountains, with impressive views and numerous geological attractions. The cycling circuit is 28 kilometres long from the harbour. Check road and rental conditions before setting out.
