Stjørdal: Culture, Urban Greenery and Riverside Scenery
Accommodation in Stjørdal
Stjørdal can be explored through a variety of themes: culture around Kimen kulturhus, the waterfront and boating history at Naustberget, and trails through green spaces. These places give your stay different focal points and help you plan your trip according to your interests.
Kimen Park and Culture in the Centre
Kimen Park is Stjørdal’s central city park, extending from the Kimen cultural centre. The grounds include lawns, several play areas and benches, as well as art, plantings and fountains. The park can host outdoor cultural events, such as concerts connected with the cultural centre. Kimen kulturhus is a venue in Stjørdal; its programme changes, so it is worth checking event dates before your trip.
Kimen is also a useful landmark for finding your way around the centre: Stjørdal station is about a ten-minute walk from Kimen kulturhus. The combination of city park and venue makes culture and green space closely connected themes of a stay here.
Naustberget: River, Sea and Boathouses
The small recreational area of Naustberget, close to the centre, lies by the river and the sea. Its shoreline includes rocks and a beach, is connected to the marina basin and is shaped by busy boating activity. The last remaining boathouses associated with sea fishing in Stjørdalshalsen stand in this setting. At Naustberget, the waterfront landscape and traces of local fishing history come together.
Green Spaces and Trails
Sandskogan is a nature-rich green area in the centre of Stjørdal. The area is criss-crossed by numerous hiking trails and a path for walking and cycling with several rest stops. Sandskogan is also part of a continuous green corridor and serves as an important ecological link, including for pollinating insects. So it is not only a place for trails and rest stops, but also has an ecological function within the urban area.
Remarka, Stjørdal’s municipal forest, offers lovely trails in both summer and winter; part of the route is lit. When conditions allow, the ski trails can run from Remarka to Stjørdal golf course, the ski hut at Litjtrøa (Vassbygda), Skjeldstadmark, Forbordsfjellet, Frolfjellet and Forradal. The trail network covers several miles in total. Another specific route detail: the section from Resve to Hessjøen is universally designed.
More Cultural Sites in the Wider Stjørdal Destination
In the wider Stjørdal destination, Hegra Fortress and Leirfall add to the area’s cultural and historical attractions. Hegra Fortress is a national cultural heritage site and a symbol of Norwegian resistance. Its museum presents the fortress’s construction history, the neutrality watch during the First World War, the battles of 1940 and the reconstruction in the 1980s. On display are photographs, uniforms, weapons and personal belongings from that period. Leirfall is one of the largest rock art sites in Northern Europe, with almost 1,200 rock carvings featuring a wide range of motifs and compositions.
Stjørdal Museum is housed in the old vicarage east of Værnes Church, two kilometres from the centre of Stjørdal. It is built around Martin Moe’s collection of antiques and natural history material; the museum grounds also include Prestegårdshagen, a historic garden in the English landscape style. Værnes Church was begun around 1100 and is considered a unique cultural treasure because of its medieval roof trusses. The church also contains the Værnes Chair from 1685, an altarpiece from 1639, frescoes and runic inscriptions.
