Sauland can be explored through three focal points when planning a trip: the listed church, the milling history at Omnesfossen, and the paths and activities along the river. Architectural history and hydropower shape different chapters of the place; by the water, swimming, fishing and the Elvestien circular trail are also on offer.

Church and Milling History

Sauland kyrkje is a listed church built in 1859. The government architect and architect Christian H. Grosch designed it; it was put into use and inaugurated later that same year.

The area around Omnesfossen and Heddal Mølle is located in Sauland, right by the European route, and is considered a well-known landmark. Its history is connected with the use of hydropower. The municipality of Heddal expropriated Omnesfossen in 1916 and put a roller mill into operation there in 1919. It was powered by direct water power and a turbine system. Thus, Sauland’s 1859 church and a later milling operation represent different historical themes.

Water and Riverside Trails

At Omnesfossen, the river forms natural pools and waterfalls. The site is considered one of the most important swimming spots for residents and visitors in Sauland and the surrounding area. Water levels and currents affect swimming conditions; check them before entering the water. Fishing also takes place in the pools and in river stretches below the waterfall. Before fishing, check the local rules and permits, as these may change.

The circular trail along Elvestien follows a blue-marked path beside the river. It passes through a historic area where the Hjartdal historielag has put up information boards. The route therefore combines its riverside setting with local history interpretation.

Getting Around Sauland
