If you are considering Bacúch as a travel destination, you will find several different points of interest: protected nature, a mineral spring, a longer educational trail and the Church of Saint Joseph. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether you are more interested in nature and protected areas, a hike or a particular architectural or artistic feature. You can also take the route, elevation and journey into account in your planning.

Protected nature and the spring

The Nízke Tatry Natura 2000 site also includes the cadastral area of Bacúch. Bacúšska Jelšina National Nature Reserve is also part of the protected area of Bacúch. These are two different points of reference for orienting yourself: the town’s connection to a larger Natura 2000 site and a specifically named nature reserve. A particular natural attraction is the Prameň Boženy Němcovej spring.

Prameň Boženy Němcovej is a mineral spring in the forest above Bacúch, at an elevation of 635 metres. It lies on the northern edge of Bacúch, along a blue-marked hiking trail that leads to Bacúšske sedlo and the main ridge of the Low Tatras. This means you can take both the spring’s location and the trail route, with its named destinations, into account when planning.

The Bacúch–Vyšná Boca educational trail

The Bacúch–Vyšná Boca educational trail is 14 kilometres long and takes approximately five and a half hours. Set aside a dedicated block of time for this outing: its approximate duration makes it a different kind of plan from visiting a single natural attraction. Five information boards cover Bacúch, the Prameň Boženy Němcovej spring, the Podvrch locality, Bacúšske sedlo and Vyšná Boca. The trail also provides access to a former copper mine.

The two hiking options differ in their respective focus: the spring option centres on its location and the blue-marked trail, while the educational trail is defined by its 14-kilometre route and approximate duration of five and a half hours. This can help you weigh a specific natural attraction against a longer outing when planning your day.

Church of Saint Joseph

The Church of Saint Joseph in Bacúch adds a distinct cultural dimension alongside nature and hiking. It was built in 1863 and renovated and extended in 1936. The main altar also dates from 1863; the painting by J. Jonáš depicts Bacúch and timber transport. The building’s history and the altar painting offer two specific ways to appreciate the church: the development of the building over time and a motif connecting the town with timber transport. For your travel plans, this is a different focus from the length or route of a trail.
