Helpa: Hiking, Cycling and Culture
Accommodation in Helpa
Helpa can be planned as a travel destination from several specific perspectives: you can focus on a circular hike with a stated distance, a mountain event, a cycling loop or the protected character of the village. The information below sets out the natural environment, routes and culture so you can see which focus suits your travel dates.
Natural environment and hiking routes
The highest parts of the area of Helpa, along the ridge of the Low Tatras, lie within Nízke Tatry National Park. The southern part of the cadastral area also extends into the Veľká Stožka State Nature Reserve. These different protected-area designations place the natural environment in context; hiking routes, by contrast, can be distinguished by their specific starting points and formats.
The Náučný chodník chotárom obce Heľpa educational trail is an 8.3-kilometre circular route that can take up to 3.5 hours. You can start in the village centre, and parking is available at Jarmočisko. If you would rather make a summit your destination than take a circular route, Route A of the Výstup na Veľký bok runs from Helpa’s square to the summit of Veľký bok. For the less demanding option, the hike starts at Priehyba Saddle; participants are taken there from Helpa by bus. This gives you a choice for your hiking stay between a circular route with a stated distance and walking time, and a summit event with different options.
Cycling and getting there
A specific route is also described for cycling trips: the Z Heľpy cez Pohorelú na Priehybu loop is 23.6 kilometres long and rated moderate. It starts at a car park in Helpa and goes to Priehyba, a connecting point between Liptov and Horehronie. Compared with the 8.3-kilometre educational trail, it is a longer distance and a different way of getting around. The route details therefore give you different points of reference for planning your day.
Helpa can be reached by bus or train. There is also an electric bicycle charging station in the village square. Getting there and the charging point are two separate practical considerations you can take into account when planning a trip by public transport or e-bike.
Architectural heritage and local history
Helpa’s protected zone has been under protection since 1992. Its architectural character is defined by wooden log houses originally arranged in blocks. Most of the houses have their gable ends facing the street; traditional shingle-roof details are also among the defining features.
Another historic building is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The late Baroque church was built in 1800 and has a wooden Louis Seize pulpit dating from the early 19th century. The construction date and the pulpit thus offer two distinct art-historical points of reference: the church’s construction around 1800 and the later furnishing detail.
Festivals and hiking events
Horehronské dni spevu a tanca takes place every year in Helpa on the last weekend in June. The programme includes traditional crafts, ethnographic exhibitions and traditional cuisine. If you would like to plan your stay around this festival, check the announced dates when arranging your trip.
The hiking events also have set recurring dates: Výstup na Veľký bok is held every year on the first Saturday in August. The winter hike Silvestrovský výstup na Veľkú Vápenicu takes place every year on 31 December. The two hiking events therefore differ both in date and destination. If you are travelling for either event, you can check the relevant event announcement before booking.
