Michalová: Industrial Heritage, Luštiareň and Calvary
Accommodation in Michalová
Michalová lies in a spur of the Brezno Basin, in the valley of the Rohozná stream. The inhabited area ranges from 585 to 1,195 metres above sea level. For travel planning, the town is defined above all by its local industrial and forestry history, religious and technical cultural sites, and cycling connections. The Rohoznianska jelšina nature reserve is also nearby.
Industrial history and parish church
A blast furnace was built in Michalová in 1795. Iron ore mining and processing continued until 1877, when the furnace was dismantled due to a shortage of ore. These dates mark the beginning and end of local ore processing. The parish church, Kostol sv. Štefana Uhorského, is also connected with this history: materials from the former blast furnace were used to build it. The church was completed in 1897. Its main altar features an image of Saint Stephen of Hungary, painted by Linhard Vilmos in Budapest in 1896.
Luštiareň, educational trail and Calvary
Luštiareň is a national cultural monument and a technical heritage site. It was used to extract seeds from cones for forest nurseries and reforestation. This brings two distinct technical themes together in Michalová: iron ore processing and seed production for forestry.
The educational trail has six information boards and connects the area by the church, Luštiareň, the cultural centre and Hrable Street. It thus links several local points of interest rather than focusing on a single building. Calvary adds a religious site to this overview: construction of a chapel began there in 2013. In 2014, a Way of the Cross was laid out using large stones and bronze plaques for the stations.
Community festivals and local crafts
Dni obce Michalová is a recurring public community festival. The municipality announced the 14th edition for 15 and 16 August 2026. The programmes for 2025 and 2026 included public, family-oriented activities featuring food, music, markets and exhibitions. At a celebration in 2019, visitors learned about the history of local handicrafts and watched local craftspeople make wood carvings. This demonstration is therefore associated with a specific occasion. Check the dates in the announcement for each festival before planning a future visit.
Natural surroundings and cycling connections
The Rohoznianska jelšina nature reserve is located near Michalová, along the road from Michalová to Brezno. It is subject to the fifth level of protection and is of scientific, educational and cultural-educational importance. The protected natural area includes rare mountain alder stands of priority habitat type 91E0, at an altitude of about 570 metres.
The 30-kilometre cycling route “Okolo Michalovej na Kabátovú” passes through Michalová and then runs alongside the nature reserve. The “Sedlo Burda – Krátke – Bujakovo” cycling route passes through Michalová Brest and via the village square and Hrable in Michalová. The first route is described by its total length and course alongside the protected area, while the second names a sequence of sections through the locality.
Railway line towards Tisovec
A railway line runs through Michalová from Brezno via Hálny to Polhorská Polhora. Beyond that point, it becomes a cog railway that runs through extensive coniferous forests to Tisovec. If you are planning a train journey, check the timetable and operating days in advance.
