Šumiac – Culture and Mountain Trails
Accommodation in Šumiac
Šumiac combines local craft and folklore history with hiking, cycling, and winter routes.
Cultural History and Local Traditions
The Múzeum zvoncov a spiežovcov at Bučinka 23 is the private collection of Mikuláš Gigac. Another cultural venue is the Šumiacka izba, an exhibition on Šumiac’s traditional culture next to the primary school in the village square. Its first section displays a room and a kitchen furnished in the style of former homes in Šumiac. The furnishings include a traditional “špohret.” Visits to the Šumiacka izba require advance booking by phone, so please call before visiting.
Bell-making is also part of the area’s historical craft tradition: it was a household craft associated with sheep and cattle farming that developed particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Greek Catholic Church of the Ascension of the Lord adds an architectural landmark to the local history. The Baroque-classical church was built in 1775 on the site of an older wooden building dating from 1643 and renovated between 1898 and 1901. It has a three-tier iconostasis dating from 1909.
The folk ensembles FS Šumiačan and Šumiačaník have been based in Šumiac for more than 50 years. In winter, the event “Vianoce pod Kráľovou hoľou,” also known as “Kračun pod Kráľovou hoľou,” takes place in the Greek Catholic Church. FS Šumiačan performs Christmas and church songs there in Old Church Slavonic and Slovak; choirs and ensembles from across Slovakia also take part each year. Šumiac has held celebrations marking the sovereignty of the Slovak Republic since 1992. They conclude with the lighting of a bonfire at Úboč.
Hiking, Cycling, and Winter Routes
A blue-marked hiking trail leads from Šumiac to Kráľova hoľa. The mountain is also a ski touring area approved by the NAPANT administration. The hiking trail and the ski touring area offer different options for planning: one is described as a marked route from Šumiac, while the other is a designated area for ski touring.
Two circular cycling routes start in Šumiac, with significantly different distances and elevation gains. The “Cyklookruh Šumiac – Vaľkovňa – Zlatno” is rated easy and covers 20 kilometres with 210 metres of elevation gain. The “Šumiacky okruh cez Besník” is difficult, 36 kilometres long, and has 1,130 metres of elevation gain. The routes differ in distance, elevation gain, and stated difficulty; cycling route conditions may change seasonally.
In winter, the 6.2-kilometre cross-country ski trail from Šumiac to Predné sedlo below Kráľova hoľa is groomed. During the cold season, Chamkova stodola can be visited via a groomed cross-country ski trail through snow-covered meadows. For both options, seasonal changes in trail conditions are relevant to planning.
A separate connection is a section of forest road between Šumiac and Predné sedlo. It was reported complete on 23 June 2025 and is more than 6.3 kilometres long. If you plan to use this forest road, check the current access conditions locally.
An Activity Away from the Routes
Lesná sauna Šumiac offers a traditional dry sauna and a natural cool-down in a nearby mountain stream. It is intended for small groups or a romantic stay for two. The sauna experience adds another option for planning a stay alongside the cultural and route-related activities.
