Discover Telgárt: Nature Trails, Viaducts and Local Culture
Accommodation in Telgárt
Discover Telgárt from different perspectives: its nature reserve and nature trails, striking railway structures, seasonal offerings at Ski Telgárt, and local culture.
Natural Landscape and Trails
Telgárt lies between the Low Tatras, Slovak Paradise, and Muránska planina national parks. In the Meandre Hrona nature reserve, this landscape meets a specially protected natural area: the site is managed by the Low Tatras National Park and is subject to the fourth level of protection. Follow the park’s current rules when visiting.
The Meandre Hrona nature trail is nine kilometers long and can be started in Telgárt, near Hotel Telgárt. Trail conditions and seasonal conditions may vary. Another landmark is the nature trail to the source of the Hron: it starts at Telgárt penzión railway stop and continues a few meters farther to a seating area by the river’s source. If you are planning to travel by train to this starting point, check the connections in advance.
Viaducts and Railway Structures
The Telgártský Viaduct is 22 meters high and 86 meters long. The Chmarošský Viaduct is distinguished by its nine stone arches; its clear height is up to 18 meters. The structure can be seen from the main road. The measurements describe two different impressions: the height and length of the Telgártský Viaduct, and the arches and their clear height at the Chmarošský Viaduct.
The Telgártska slučka also offers a close-up look at railway engineering. It includes a spiral tunnel with a curve radius of 400 meters and a length of 1,239 meters. The railway structures range from the visible arches of the viaducts to the geometry of the tunnel.
Seasonal Offerings at Ski Telgárt
Ski Telgárt has nine downhill slopes and seven lifts. The area lies at an elevation of 905 to 1,309 meters; the slopes are 6.5 kilometers long in total. Operations and conditions vary by season. There is also a one-kilometer cross-country ski trail in the ski area. Its preparation depends on snow conditions. This lets you distinguish between the downhill slopes and a shorter trail without assuming any particular snow conditions.
Local History and Living Traditions
A monument in the village square commemorates the Slovak National Uprising. Local culture also includes customs and traditions that residents continue to preserve; folk dress is still worn. The polyphonic singing of the Horehronie region was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2017, with support from the municipalities of Vernár, Telgárt, Šumiac, and Pohorelá.
The Church of the Most Holy Trinity (Chrám Najsvätejšej Trojice) is a Baroque-classical building dating from 1784. It is listed in the Central Register of the Slovak Monuments Fund under number 84/1. A church in Telgárt also helps preserve local traditions such as pilgrimages and religious festivals, which attract visitors from surrounding regions as well.
Above Telgárt, on Ždiar, stands Slovakia’s tallest wooden cross. The Voglov chodník trail leads to it. For travelers interested in crafts as well as buildings, Telgárt has a fully operational blacksmith’s workshop. A report dated January 16, 2026, mentioned hands-on workshops where visitors could try blacksmithing themselves.
Cycling Route and Regional Specialties
A newly built cycling route connects Telgárt with Šumiac; e-bike access to Kráľova hoľa is offered alongside it. For a different kind of local discovery, try the food and drinks: Telgárt Resort serves traditional dishes from the Horehronie region, such as halušky and Telgárt podpecníky, as well as the local beer “Telgartská 12.” The menu and availability may change. If a particular dish matters to you, check what is currently on offer in advance.
Depo Café Telgárt is located in a historic railway carriage and offers a view of the Chmarošský Viaduct. As opening arrangements may change, check the current options in advance if you plan to visit.
