Tomášov: Church History and Parkland
Accommodation in Tomášov
Tomášov in its geographical setting
Tomášov is located in the Podunajská nížina, in the western part of Žitný ostrov on the alluvial ridge of the Malý Dunaj. For travellers looking for a hotel in Tomášov, several themes shape the choice of destination: church architecture, a restored wayside cross, the historic manor house of the Art Hotel Kaštieľ, its park and a weather-dependent adventure golf course. Sacred architecture, local history, observing nature and leisure activities therefore offer distinct points of interest.
An alluvial ridge is a raised landform created by deposits. Tomášov’s geographical location can therefore be understood not only through the names of the larger geographical regions, but also by reference to a specific landform.
Church and ecclesiastical furnishings
The parish church of “Kostol svätého Mikuláša” in Tomášov has a single nave, a semicircular sanctuary and a rectangular bell tower. “Single-nave” describes a church building with one main nave; the sanctuary is the area associated with the altar. Its furnishings include an organ dating from 1864, with eight stops, one manual and pedals. The manual is the keyboard, while the stops produce different tone colours; the eight stops and the single manual are therefore separate specifications. There are two Romanesque baptismal fonts beside the present-day church.
Wayside cross and chapel
A restored wayside cross is considered an important local monument and is associated with how Tomášov’s past is presented. Its restoration was completed in 2021. The “Kaplnka sv. Kríža” chapel in Tomášov is Neo-Gothic and was built at the end of the 19th century. The dates have different meanings: 2021 marks the completion of the restoration, while the late 19th century indicates when the chapel was built.
Art Hotel Kaštieľ: History and Style
The Art Hotel Kaštieľ was built between 1766 and 1769 by Baron Ján Jesenák as an aristocratic country residence; its style is classicising Austrian Baroque. In comparison with the Neo-Gothic chapel from the late 19th century, the building is earlier and belongs to a different style. “Classicising” describes an approach inspired by classical forms; Neo-Gothic revived Gothic forms in a later period of construction. The two buildings can thus be distinguished both by when they were built and by their styles.
English-Style Park and Adventure Golf
The Art Hotel Kaštieľ has a 17-hectare English-style park. A herd of fallow deer has lived there since 2012. Information boards explain rare tree species; the signage may change. The boards draw attention to rare trees, while the fallow deer offer a different connection with nature. If the animals or boards are important to your plans, check in advance both whether the herd is currently present and its size, as well as the current state of the signage.
The adventure golf course is open daily in good weather; admission is available at the Kaštieľ reception. Check whether it is operating before your visit, as this depends on the weather. Adventure golf is thus a specific activity with an explicitly stated weather condition, alongside Tomášov’s cultural and historical attractions.
