Hrkovce: the Ipeľ, vineyards and local history
Accommodation in Hrkovce
Hrkovce lies on the northern bank of the Ipeľ. The Krupinka stream forms the eastern municipal boundary, and the Štiavnička the western boundary. Hrkovce is situated in the Ipeľská pahorkatina at an altitude of 125 to 205 metres above sea level. The valley near Hrkovce is less than three kilometres wide between two mountain ranges. Watercourses, elevation and the shape of the valley thus define the geographical reference points of the village.
History and architecture
The first written mention of Hrkovce dates from 1156. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria was built in 1770 and is Baroque-Classical in style. On 29 July 1808, Hrkovce burned down almost completely; the church survived the fire. The contrast between the almost completely destroyed village and the church that withstood the fire makes this event a particularly striking part of the village’s history. The style designation describes the church’s combination of Baroque design and Classical features.
The Chapel of the Most Holy Redeemer dates from 1900. A statue of Saint Urban, patron saint of winegrowers, holding a bunch of grapes stands in Hrkovce’s vineyards. The agricultural cooperative in Hrkovce cultivates 25 hectares of vineyards. The statue provides a cultural link to the cultivated vineyards; the church and chapel add religious buildings from different centuries to this aspect of the village’s history.
Summer festivities in Hrkovce
The summer festivities have been held annually since 1999. Their annual programme includes a football tournament between unmarried and married men at the local football pitch. Baňa is a natural amphitheatre in Hrkovce’s vineyards and is used for community entertainment during the festivities. The tournament and Baňa represent different settings for the festival.
