Kmeťovo lies in the Žitavská pahorkatina on the right-bank floodplain of the Žitava. East of the built-up area, the river flows in a channel confined by levees. The landscape and local cultural monuments offer different starting points for planning a trip: the focus is on both the riverside area and the history of the village.

River Landscape and Routes

The protected Žitavský luh preserves the last remnant of the river’s original meandering course. Protected waterbirds use the area for breeding and migration. The natural monument PP Žitava also protects an old course of the Žitava. Together with the riverside vegetation, it is considered a valuable biological and landscape feature. The river, its bankside vegetation, and birdlife are among the defining natural features around Kmeťovo.

The Žitavský luh educational trail is accessible from State Road 511 via the levee and the Kmeťovo bridge. On the accessible section, travel is possible only on foot or by bicycle. As trail conditions can change seasonally, it is best to check them before setting out. A specific hiking route is also available: the 28 km Kmeťovo–Kolta route, numbered 0710, reaches Žitavský luh after 2.7 km. This distance describes the route; it should not be confused with the access rules for the educational trail.

Church and Local Heritage

An important architectural monument in Kmeťovo is the Neoclassical Church of the Virgin Mary of the Rosary. It was built in 1882. The church contains an almost life-size statue made of pear wood. In 1994, a chapel was added and dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the three Košice martyrs. Its furnishings include an altar with a statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, as well as a wooden wall relief of the Košice martyrs. The relief was carved by Vašek from Mojzesovo.

A cross with a crucifix above the altar is also part of the church’s history. It was made in Vienna after the First World War. The information about the church distinguishes its construction date from later additions and other historical details. A marble cross dating from 1914 stands in the cemetery in Kmeťovo. The village also has a statue of the Holy Trinity from 1924; a statue of Saint Urban dating from 1874 stands among the vineyards.

Viticulture and Historical Customs

The tradition of viticulture is another local theme. Historical practice included a devotional gathering held every year at Stará hora on the Sunday after the feast of Saint Urban. Wine-tasting competitions were also held in Kmeťovo; their tradition dates back to 1978.

Historical Christmas customs included fruit, Pupáčky, Kapustnica, and fish on Christmas Eve. Carnival celebrations, especially masked balls, were also among Kmeťovo’s former customs. The natural landscape, religious buildings, and local traditions offer different themes for planning your trip: you can focus on the river and the educational trail, the dated cultural monuments, or the history of wine and festive traditions.
